I have NO idea about what I use for work (at the university). I just start the job at my terminal and some seconds later its finished.

At my home rig, this takes 12-15 minutes..
    (Home rig = PIV@2.23GHz, 1giga ddr333.).

The PC version of the proggy in question might be a lot less optimised than the Unix version, I have no idea.

The systems I've mentioned are used for a DataWarehouse system (still building this), and a telecom application. All these are based on Oracle 9i db and coded using C++, java, cgi and some sql. The C++ and the java parts are completly portable so you can complile them and use 'em on any sort of platform. Belive it or not some of this run in half the time on a Celeron@1.1Ghz rather than what they do on the big expensive systems. Unfortunately some people prefer to spend money on funcy and expensive servers and cut down on pay rises rather than listen to the humble engineers and go for in-expensive x86 servers (Intel or AMD) where ever applicable.....

The only reason I get to play with that kind of power, is thats its there. The chemists are using some huge and ugly routines to predict smallscale physical chemistry (I belive the entire systems has acces to a little over two terrabyte of ram).

Luckily they dont hog the resources all the time, small jobs slip through and pass unnoticed.

I managed to recently swap out my PII 350 for a PIII 450 at work. Brought in my own RAM though as the 64Mb made win2k struggle! And of course I replaced the g200 with my g450 so I can have dual monitors.

Don't really need anything better to browse the web on, do I?

My new computer at work is a Gateway P4 2.0Ghz.
They got me an 18" FP Monitor.
So I check out the video: Intel on chip crap!
                  It uses sytem memory!
                  No DVI.
Not upgradeable: No F@#$ing AGP port!!!!!!
Basicly, a $1000 monitor being driven by $5 vid card.
They have agreed to order a G450 PCI to put in it.
I guess thats the best I can do.

i'm not even sure there exists a more powerful pci card...
                    unless u think a GeForce2mx is better...

Voodoo 5 5500 pci? (he he he, try blagging that)

                      I work on PII 400 w/192Mb RAM.
                      2*10Gb hard disks.
I do VB6, VC++, Access, and desktop stuff.
Compliling the program takes beyond 20 mins.
The computers i install the software on are largely faster than the machine i develop on...
they all have overkill PIII 800 or even P4 1.6Ghz machines...
oh well, just have to change job.

I think some Radeon cards come in PCI as well... And then there's the 3Dlabs Oxygen series

I just do coding in some Oracle databases and some PowerBuilder.
& we might run a QuakeWorld server at lunch from time to time.
The G450 PCI has DVI out + Matrox quality.
It will be fine. But not exactly 1337.

You can get Kyro2 cards in PCI - and they're IQ is pretty good

There exist two PCI GF4MXs, one of which is from Gainward (forgotten the other mfg), if it interests anyone.

BTW I own a Kyro II and either my monitor or its image quality are crap above 1152x864. I'm running an Iiyama MA901U btw.
