The reason I didnt order a soundcard is because I have a PCI Soundblaster Live at home .. besides that: there is a Creative PCI thingy onboard that mobo

ohw and I wish to upgrade to Hammer/Barton once..

            1. I don't think that this is a "great machine" or "nice configuration" or whatever ... I suggest you to get something like :
            AMD Athlon XP 2000+
            Abit KX7 KT 333
            512MB Samsung PC2700 (DDR333)
            Maxtor 80 Gb 7200 2 Mb
            Monitor - ViewSonic .... .... ....
CD Plextor (something like PLEXTOR W4012 40/12/40 IDE)
            ........

            2. There is no need to wait. Why ??? Because after 1 month there will be new AMD or Intel processor, Parhelia 256 ... and so on. So majbe you wish to wait whole life ))

            3. Do you know the price of Ati 9700 ?????
            Abit KG7-Raid
            AMD Athlon 1,4 GHz
            256 DDR 2100
Matrox Millenium G400 DH 32 Mb
            17 " ViewSonic P70f
            15 Gb Maxtor 5400/2 Mb ATA 100
            CD-ROM Teac 32x
            FreeBSD/Win2k

Uh .. an Abit or an Gigabyte.. I read a review very much in favour of the Gigabyte one. Personal preferences I guess. Plus I dont like the fan on the Abits chipset.

For the harddrive. There is not much performance difference ..

The CD-R .. I dont care, lite-on is good too

Anyway: not discussing that in this forum..

Price for Radeon 9700 will be like 399$. I suppose it'll be on par in price with the parhelia.

So as soon as both are available I make my choice .. or I might go with a parhelia as soon as its in that store I buy at.

Abit = garbage due to low quality caps they use and fail in short order.

It seems DarkStar is a bit too newbie in the hardware business

True, but bad advice is worse than no advice.

(btw you logged off Messenger way too soon... had someone come to the door keeping me from answering)

Internet, regular office apps.. some DTP apps. Video playback (mpeg).. TV out .. And some games like fifa soccer
Depends how serious are you on gaming and DTP.

For internet and regular office apps G400 is sufficient.

If you are heavy into DTP (image colour matching) Parhelia is the best solution right now because of giga colour and glyph AA. Depends how 10-bit colur is implemented.

For light DTP G400 is very good (image quality).

For gaming alone it's better in my opinion to buy cheaper (midrange performance) cards more often than top of the line every two years.

Another problem with Abit boards is they have this bad tendancy to not work with new chips...

all the KG7's that i ever saw had problems with Palomino chips.

the KX7 i have seen would not post with a 2200+ on it, and we verified the chip worked fine by using one of our boards.

consider asus a7v333 ;-) have one personaly and am very satisfied with the board. have no fan on northbridge, reads processor temperature directly from chip (shutdown temp is configurable in newer bioses) and not in last place - running my xp1500+ @166mhz fsb ;-)

Asus .. probably wouldnt be too bad a motherboard. However I set my mind and already placed the order.

I am waiting to buy a Matrox card later on. I read on an article about the Siggraph conference something about higher clocked Parhelia's .. So I'll take my chances and wait for a few months. See what Matrox will pop up!
