  • Custom Resolutions - Matrox Sales is invited to have a peek, too

    Hi Guys,

since the guys from Matrox' Sales Dept. dared to come out of the shade and more or less often visit these halls, I thought it might be an interesting idea to start a poll about which custom resolution would be needed most and which ones would be desired by how many users.

    What do you think ?

Please, bare with me if I don't have your custom resolution in that poll, but feel free to post yours if needed.

I forgot to mention, choose as many option as you need, cause I didn't restrict the poll to just one choice per user.

Shouldn't it be 1400 x 1050? That's what some laptop manufacturers use (Dell for one).

I still want to be able to create any custom resolution myself when I find out that I need it.
The ceased support for this is really a bad decision.
With a card of the two currently biggest players (ATI and NVidia) you can at least be sure that you'll get support for this in Powerstrip. ATI also offers a tool for the R8500 that can create custom resolutions.

Since there are people from Matrox Sales looking I'd be VERY curious to hear a logic explanation for the reasons behind this decision.

P.S.: I'm a bit surprised that not even the standard HDTV resolutions are supported. Didn't Matrox always emphasize video/DVD playback.

Besides IQ and 2D desktop powerdesk features are the primary reason my 3D prophet 2MX sits in it's retail box and my G400 SH 16SGRAM sits in my AGP slot.

                          - custom resolutions. (try 1280×1024 on 19 or 21" monitor and draw a circle in CorelDraw or download Nokia Monitor Test from reactor critical) either your circles will be elliptical or you will have 2 black bands on each side of your monitor. Some people like 1400×1050 on their 21" monitors, lot's of people like 1280×960 on their 19" monitors.

1280×1024 is less acceptable for DTP and CAD (parhelia's target markets)

Since Matrox cards are more expensive (better quality and support) than competition (price/performance) there is a large chance your customers use big quality monitors

(Count me out I'm siting infront of this POS 17" but my next upgrade will be 2 19" Mitsubishi SBs - hence I bought G400 SH because I was sure by the time I'll have 2 good monitors there will be a better card to drive them)

                          - enforcing refresh rates. Since I have lenghtened my monitor's cable (2 big desks) Windows 98 won't detect DDC and will not give me 85Hz refresh rate with GF2 MX. Installing back teh G400 fixed it

                          - Matrox and Pinnacle are big videoediting players. Matrox video suggests G550 or parhelia. Those videoguys just love funky resolutions.

                          - Even if you never use a feature it's still good to know it's there. (like virtual desktop can be used to enlarge Maya's software render buffer)

While they are reading along: fix the memory usage of Powerdesk! I find it insane that a display driver is using almost 18MB of memory. Not everybody is in the luxurious position to have an excessive amount of memory.
