We all know Matrox is the best when it comes to 2D image quality, but what about 2D speed? Specifically, the speed of old 2D games like Duke3D and DOS Quake. I've been trying to find some old magazines but I haven't yet found any commenting on speed in games.

I'm pretty sure back then the amount of ram and the system played a bigger role than the card did....Wikipedia and Google.... the needles to my tangent habit.

When the video is done by software, it's largely CPU dependent. Anything you're likely to have should be quite fast enough.Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

My Mil was good for DOS games, decent 2 ran a little slow at anything higher than 800x600 on my 166mmx, though
Oh, and I could never get rid of the tearing in Commander Keen, even with SVGA compatibility mode on.
But it was the fastest and best card under DOS back then - until the Tseng ET6000 came around, but I think overall the Millennium was still the better card, and was there MUCH earlier.
