  • Smooth playback with PAL & DVDMax: a solution

I (well, not me really) eventually found a solution in respect to the PAL & DVDMax problem which would produce choppy playback with Divx video. I have been browsing in this forum quite a bit looking for a solution but unless i missed something nobody provided a definite answer. I did the same at doom9 and found the following thread: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.ph...hlight=reclock

Reclock is a directshow filter that will try to find the appropriate framerate in order to match 25fps as closely as possible. As far as i understood audio is also resampled accordingly.

Should this be old news then please forgive me for waisting your time.

Well it's new for me Seems to work, finally I get those 23.9somthingFPS XvidDs smoothly on my TV. The refreshrate of the primary monitor doesn't seem to care much when using DVDMax. Just force the movie to 25fps does the trick. Haven't tried with those NTSC rates though, might be trickier.

Too bad the app doesn't seem te remember the setting when reopening the media player. Have to force it to 25fps every time. Guess the creator of ReClock doesn't have a Matrox :P

I am glad that my first post was useful

Letting Reclock match your refreshrate automatically should work fine. Let's add that the one or other frame will still be dropped since it can only get as close to 25fps as possible.

Interestingly i noticed that my PAL dvds play perfectly smoothly even without reclock. I was wondering if PC DVD players were preserving the original framerate of film material (24fps) instead of accelerating movies to 25 fps. It's possible that DVDMax is optimised for that kind of content. I will have to check this later today i suppose. I could very well be wrong...

As far as i am concerned even my 25fps divx prduce a lot of stuttering on my TV screen despite the fact that its PAL to PAL. Interestingly everything is perfectly smooth without DVDMax in Clone mode (also on TV). Weird...

There is just one more thing that i should probably add:
Driver 5.86 produce choppy divx videos for material that is already at 25fps in DVDmax while 5.85 does not. I am beginning to wonder if i have not gone crazy but i fear i can at least reproduce it on my machine. DIVXG400 obviously does not fix it since this is 25fps already. Reclock makes it bearable but not perect.
Quality is quite good in PAL while pictures are blurry in NTSC so for me the latter is not an alternative. At least everything is fine now with 5.85 & PAL.
