  • G200 Problem

I'm having trouble with my g200. The latest drivers seems to lock up the system at boot up. I've used the unistall util to remove the driver and tried the driver that comes with W2K then everything appears to opperate fine untill it is powered off or the monitors are disconnected. I've searched this forum and others and cannot find a match to my issue. I can get around the problem by hitting F8 at bootup and choose VGA mode and wait for the PC to come up and then reboot. After the reboot the G200 appears to work ok. I've had strange problems with windows update causing the sytem to lock up.

I removed the second thread. Thanks!

I purchased the G200 on e-bay and found out that it was an OEM Compaq card. I don't think that the official Matrox tech forum will support it. I just discoverd this after posting my thread.

chhfchhf : why r u so harsh on matrox cards ?? and even if the cards have any problems or u don't like em, u can make another thread with ur opinion or ur own troubles .. but ur not helping anyone this way; not even urself ..

G200 cards are very good and they do what they r intended for.

          on to the subject :
TomL : welcome to the board and congratulations as u got urself a very fine card .. even if it's not fast in 3D like newer cards.

          check the following :

-update ur motherboard bios if it's not up-to-date.

-update the G200 card's bios, u can check the compaq site for bios updates, if they don't have get it from matrox site.
I don't remember what's the latest bios or the links off hand, but i'm sure u'll find it at matrox website in the support section.
u can check ur current bios and driver version in the information tab in the advanced display properties.

-u said the latest G200 driver gave u troubles, as well as the win2k built-in drivers, the win2k built-in drivers are lower than ver. 5.03 or 5.04 i think and they don't use the G200 card at its full extent(ex. no OGL acceleration i think and no monitor customization tab); but between those old win2k built-in drivers and the latest drivers there've been many drivers builds which u should try as well.
what about the before latest drivers ?? what about the ones b4 that ??
u can get the not so latest drivers from matrox support page as well .. i think there's a link for older drivers, or through ftp.matrox.com/pub/mga/
          ...
again i dunno these links off hand.

-also there've been several MS whql certified drivers from matrox for win2k, u can check those as well.

-u can check if compaq has posted any updated drivers, but u should know which model no. is ur card 1st and in which compaq pc it was originally installed so u can look for updates for it.

-i think that the matrox drivers and bios from matrox site should work, unless compaq has made some changes to the card either physically or through the bios.

wish u good luck and i hope u like ur card.

funny problem threads about the g200. i posted about one year ago nearly the same prob (g200 on amd 750 ) thread "g200 problem".

funny enough just today i tried to set up that g200 again in the amd 750 comp of my girlfriend after removing it of my linux comp.
i uninstalled every trace of the g400 drivers that were before in the amd750 comp, installation of g200 went flawless. 2 reboots too. suddenly 1 hour later my gf calls me that she couldnt boot up windows 98 as it would lock down after the windows loading screen.
oh well the g200 was and is working flawless but in 2 hours there i didnt managed to find out the problem. what works is:

deinstall driver -> reboot > install driver -> reboot -> all fine.
shut comp down, rebstart everything -> broken screen after loading. only safe mode works

at the end i reinstalled the g400 in that comp altho a g200 would have been enough for the 2d office apps shes using at 800x600 anyway.. (and i wanted the g400 in my linux machine which i use a lot now as its much more silent than my biggie )

            didnt tried driver update tho
