  • G550 TV-Out question

I would like to buy one G550 for my TV divx play but my friend told me the G550 can not just connect to TV by S-Video also need to hook the VGA as main display. Is that true?

    Welcome to MURC.

Your friend is basically correct. G550 needs a VGA on the primary for proper operation. It also can't do DOS output to the TV-out.

You would be better off getting a refurbished or used G400, which CAN work properly with only a TV set up (after set up with a VGA, which can then be removed).
G400 BIOS can also be set to do DOS out.
In general G400 are the best for TV-out, especially when it's only a TV, and no VGA...

Thanks for quick answer. How about g450? I have one 21" CRT monitor so setup is no problem but I need to move my PC to living room and connect to TV for play divx. So the card must can support only TV-Out as main display.

As I said, G400 is your best bet.
G400 had an external Maven chip to handle the TV-out.
G450 and G550 integrated those functions into the main chip's ASIC (no external Maven), and it never worked as well as the original G400.

        I have had G400, G450, and G550.
Of the 3, my G400 is the one I hung onto, specifically for it's TV-out functionality. The other cards have been passed on to family/friends. G400 is far superior in TV-out, and faster in general.

The G400 is not too hot, nor is the Max. What gave you that idea?

with a g550 clone mode the TV out will work in windows. But not in DOS. So once it has booted to window, you will get the display back, it just that if you need to install and OS or do some troubleshooting you will have to connect a moniter.

But all the above about the g400's being a better choice for a divx machine are defintely true, but a 550 will suffice.

chhfchhf that's only to compensate for it's higher clock rate ie heat product.

Thanks all for suggestion. I think G400 is the best choice for me but maybe I should consider the ATI card cause can not get G400 from my location, Taiwan.

Choice Matrox card cause it's best 2D and good TV-Out quality in the first, but after realize the G550 can not support only TV-Out as main display and Parhelia is too expensive also not good in 3D performance so I decide to survey the 2nd choice, ATI Radeon 9500.

ATI card 2D quality should be the 2nd best and the Radeon 9500 also support Direct X 9 and AGP 3.0 which my mobo support too. And, it support TV-Out as main display.
