  • G550/ Windows XP - System not stable

Today I installed a brand new G550 in my system. It replaces a GF2 MX440.....
I hoped for some great image quality but al I got is trouble.....

My computer reboots sometimes, or it hangs completely or my screen turns into rubbish (this happens the most).

I tried to change the resolution, I turned on and off the dualhead display but nothing seems to help. I also installed the latest VIA drivers (4.45) and the latest Matrox drivers (5.86). It seems that the problems start after a few hours...could it be that my G550 is getting too hot?

Below is a logfile wich Windows XP created.... I hope someone can help me out.

    Specs:
    Matrox Mil. G550 (G55+MDHA32DB / Sn: PBL57297)
    AMD1800+
    MSI KT266 Pro2

Via chipset say no more. presuming you have removed all traces of your other card.

Possible solutions some are via's others are what other people have tried.

    1) Bad Via board so bin it.
    2) Insufficent power so try another power supply.
    3) Faulty memory.
    4) Try adjusting memory voltage.
    5) Try adjusting agp driving value.
    6) Faulty Video card.
    7) Try later bios upgrade.
    8) Other faulty hardware.
    9) memory timings too aggressive.
    10) Try win2k instead.
    11) Try another Video card driver.

Basically John Gatt (Via) says it a faulty Video card which is bull. He also recommends setting your bios settings to slowest settings basically dumming down you're system.
If you're lucky you may find it's faulty memory or other hardware.

Try running AGP at 1x instead of 2x or 4x.

Forgot about that one but most people found that this made no differance.

My G550 is an replacement of a GF2 MX400 videocard. So I think it should be strange if some of my hardware is bad.

The whole system is running fine now for over a year so I don't think the PSU is the problem (it's an AOpen 350 Watt) I even think it should be strange if some of my hardware is bad.

Wich Bios should I upgrade? My systemboard or G550?

I'll try to run my system with less hardware...maybe it's a IRQ conflict or something like that.

@The Pit: Do you still think there's something wrong with my hardware or timings when my system is running for over a year without problems...shouldn't it be more likely that it's a driver problem or a conflict?

Yours is a KT266, just try to run it at AGP 1x man...
As PIT says, it makes no difference in speed, but helps stability.
I know it fixed the problem on my brother's KT133.

I would say read my response @GOT (dutch forum) . There's also the link to the "detonator destroyer".

I wasn't referring to speed but to when this was all over the viahardware forums most people said that this didn't prevent the ininite loop problem. I should have made myself clearer Sorry.
Hunting this problem down is horrendous. I've had with my G550 under XP on a Via266a motherboard. The only solution was to go back to win2k in the end.
Despite what John "blame everyone else Gatt" said about faulty Video card it's still working today quite happily.

It's driving me mad...it getting worse and worse.

Afther modifying my bios by computer refuses to boot in normal mode....not even when I set the bios setting to default.

Tonight I'm going to do 3 fresh installs on a separate harddisk.....W98SE, W2K and WindowsXP....lets see what comes out.

I think I wont user XP again.....it's not that good compared to W2k :-)

It's your chipset mate looks like you've got a bad example of it. Even Via have admitted it's got errors.

My chipset is buggie? The VIA 266a? The only solution is to buy a new motherboard I presume?

                            I realy don't like that

What would you suggest. I don't want to lose my XP1800+ and 512mb DDR Ram.....

I've got exactly the same problem on XP, but with a G450 with an Asus P3B-F motherboard (intel 815ep chipset).

This system is perfectly stable with Windows 2000 but really unstable with Xp.
