Set the "AGP Aperture Size" to 256MB in the BIOS!

A good place to check out if your BIOS setting are correct is http://www.rojakpot.com/
According to the latest official figures, 43% of all statistics are totally worthless...

      I'll check that site...thanx.

I'll start with the bios defaults....when my fresh install is running fine i'll start to tweak my bios....

That's the best way to do it I presume?

No you should set your BIOS first (But avoid the most agressive mem timings) Also avoid having pnp OS enabled!

That's a little bit difficult because when I choose the optimum settings (Turbo or something like that) my computer wont even boot....

So you suggest to set my bios as fast as possible (except for the memory timing) and when it seems to boot fine start installing windows?

Nope Via suggest you load the slowest settings in regards to infinite loop. AGp size also has no effect on the infinite loop.

But there must be a great speed difference between bios default (slowest) and the optimized settings. That means that I have to live with a slow computer?

Or are the differences not that big?

After going through several VIA + Matrox installs (G200 +G400/Max mainly), I figured it was best to leave them both separated

However, if you really must, usually setting the AGP to 2x (1x didn't do anything for me) and installing the VIA 4in1 with the AGP settings set to lowest (that'd be standard as opposed to Turbo I guess), _not_ installing the VIA IDE driver and importantly, flashing newest BIOSes in both the vidcard and mobo, I could get a reasonably stable system in win98 and win2k. The problem with Win XP is that it has built-in support for VIA chipsets, so you can't set the AGP drivers the way you want... You can try installing the latest 4in1 too, but most likely it won't change the AGP settings either.

You never wondered why most MURCers had SIS-based mobos, did you?

If I knew that before...I would never have bought a MB with a VIA chipset...but that's too late now.

As I wrote in my other post: I'm going to try all your tips and trics this evening on 3 OS-es (W98SE, W2K and WXP)

                      I'll keep you informed!

That would be hard... because you can't reproduce them, or can you? I know I can't, it happens randomly.

I suppose you could try Georges patches over at

His homepage is in his sig. However I don't think his patch caters for the infinite loop but it worth a shot.

I had the same problem. Use BIOS v3.3 from MSI!! Although v3.4 says it fixes something for the G550, it does NOT. After installing v3.3 BIOS for the mainbord, the system is rock-stable.

Are you kiddin' me? MSI says 3.5 fixes the problems with the G550.

Yeasterday I tried W2K....it's a lot better but I had 2 blue screens at one evening...just browsing the internet....I'm not sure caused by the G550 but I never had them before.....

I'm goin on a holliday tonight so I'll be back in one week

Now I'm suspecting faulty hardware. Strip everything out bar the video card and do a clean install.
Also download a memory testing program and let that run.
