I think it's a market that exists just to give rich people something to spend their money on. I'm probably cripping my audio system by using... RADIO SHACK interconnects! Denon DCM-370 5-Disc Carousel CD Changer-> Technics SH-GE50 Graphic Equalizer -> Corda HA-1 Headphone Amplifier -> Sennheiser HD-600 Heaphones / Etymotic Research ER-4S Earphones. Also got a Panasonic SL-SW860 portable CD player, a Headroom Total Airhead portable headphone amp (unfortuantly the volume pot on it is busted, ) and Grado SR-80 headphones.

      Err...

My Radeon 8500 looks pretty decent on my ancient IBM G50 monitor I bought for $50... shouldn't stray TOO far off topic I guess. Actually, the 8500 works quite a bit better than my old G400 MAX. For some strange reason the G400 and/or it's drivers have an awful time using DDC with this monitor to get the proper refresh rates and stuff.

Uhmm, in 2048*1536 the text sure is readable with my 9700Pro (22" VisionMaster Pro510 here) at the windows default font sizes. It's just becoming a bit "fuzzy", but still easily readable.

The 9700Pro and the original Radeon are about the same here (I have both), with the G400 still having an ever so slight lead - although I never tested the G400 above 1600x1200@85Hz and only compared the Radeons at this and lower res..

          Ooh

Did you seriously expect a thread about IQ to go by without banding remarks? Woe is you

"So, are you saying one person in particular is responsible for allowing this banding issue to escalate into what we have now?"

Yes but I'm not sure the person we love to hate is responsible though. I just threw in his name for kicks.

Banding had to be seen during the early test stages of the final asic rev. Once they saw it, they debugged it and submitted their recommendations. One of them was probably to redo the asic. Another one was probably to add some kind of circuit on the pcb, like a simple op-amp. Both got rejected and the chip went off to production.

So who is able to take these decisions? I can only see the owners, VP's and Directors. That's 5 people to choose from.

Don't forget varition in components will have an effect as well on this. Some have said the G400 has an better image than the G550. Inmy case it was the other way round.

              My vote is
              G550
              G400
              9700 Pro.

Not that I know of, unless there's a very well hidden secret on the net.

Don't think the problematic one is a G50... should be relatively new one.

I looked around on Google, including the newsgroup searches, and the only thing I found was a few people saying that some G50's were poorly soldered and/or assembled, but not a single fire problem.

There is a bit to be said for good outpu through a KVM switch, good driving strength and filtering.... but does it reduce banding
