I run a music site myself and spend a lot of my time helping users with problems and a humorous attitude is a very central part of it. Most people see further than the tip of their nose, gladly. You know what your problem is, you better cheer up!

If I remember right, the latest drivers are DX9 compatible ?
Seemed a sarcastic way of you saying why would I need DX 8.1 when I already have something better like DX 9 installed.
About the chipset drivers, from your determined posts you seem to know a bit (or more) what you're doing, I got it like ya I'd go check on the Asus site if I need AGP drivers for an Intel board.
(5.02.1003 should be the latest for the Chipset Software Installation Utility, on Intel's site)

Well Admiral, then you misinterpreted what I meant, and that can happen. And I didn't mean to sound harsh on you or anything. But I think you should get some sleep, it does you only well. And thanks for pointing out that utility, it's already downloaded and installed.

I found out that my i845PE chipset didn't have graphic driver updates at all, they have that only for the G series of 845. Then I will now try to reinstall the DirectX files and see if that helps.

PS. I did try to change my username earlier, but I will instead stop using it entirely and use a new one...

Anyway, you do not need graphics driver for the 845PE, because it doesn't have on-board graphics!
What you need is AGP driver, which is different to graphics driver. (it is included in the utility Admiral posted)

Oh no.. I've installed the utility from Intel ver 5.0.2.1003 but with no ungreying of the fields in dxdiag. It still doesn't activate DVD Max. I reckon this is the new AGP driver we're talking about. Maybe it is so that this Asus mainboard and the Intel chipset doesn't work well with Matrox? I don't know anymore. Matrox' latest driver 5.91 also isn't digitally signed from MS, so maybe there's something there... I always get that warning when I install the Matrox G-series driver.

Guess you're back to suspecting DX9, not sure if the G series drivers are really compatible or it was just a rumor.
There isn't any good procedure to uninstalling DirectX9 except reinstaling OS . There are a few uninstallers floating around the web, though you might end up having more problems by using them.

How I solved this problem...

When "enabled but not active" started to appear I thought drivers, directx etc... but it turned out to be player setting. In this case, BS player... I changed the overlay setting manualy, ie. unchecked "Use overlay mode 1" because I wanted to use DualHead Zoom. I forgot to check it back and I lost picture in DvdMax mode.
This is because DVDMax requires overlay, but Zoom cannot show overlay. What really sucks is that BSplayer somehow changed this for all other players, WMP, DivX player, MPClassic, so neither of them showed picture through DVDMax.
So try to find where overlay got disabled, could be in a player or somewhere else (but I don't know where, I am not an expert in codecs, overlays and stuff...)

Just out of curiosity...have you (double) checked the TV out chain(connectors, cables, monitor input), as it'll never activate the DVD Max without sensing a proper 75ohms termination(which should be the video input of your monitor/tvset).

For what it is worth, I also have problems getting DVDmax to switch to active (G550 on a Supermicro x5da8 - i7505 chipset).

The workaround that never fails to work (in my case), is to turn off the multimonitor-option (there is a dialogbox somewhere, offering you to either turn it off, or on; in the latter case you can choose between same resolution and different resolutions). Main disadvantage is that this requires a reboot (but then, so does changing from a monitor to a TV, if you want it properly detected).
