  • Parhelia Precision SGT unveiled

Ok, it is a speciality board (again), this time aimed towards high-frequency grayscale stereo displays... but it is a new Matrox card.

Matrox unveils Parhelia Precision SGT graphics accelerator for high-frequency grayscale stereo displays
Bringing optimal quality, performance and flexibility to intelligence/ reconnaissance/surveillance workstations

San Diego, California, West 2004, February 3rd, 2004 — Matrox Graphics Inc., the leading manufacturer of professional graphics solutions, today announced the new Parhelia Precision SGT graphics card, uniquely designed to drive high-frequency grayscale stereo displays with industry-leading quality, the broadest compatibility, and the best grayscale stereo performance on the market.

"We are very impressed with this new Matrox Technology. In our testing we've found that the Parhelia Precision SGT delivers the best combination of performance and image quality that we've seen to-date with the Siemens SMM 21106 LS monitor," says Steve Huff, CEO, Sensor Systems Inc. "This graphics card looks very promising for our customers' requirements. Its hardware grayscale support maintains exceptionally high image quality, without any shadowing or ghosting artifacts, and ensures that all Windows® components remain visible at all times."

Delivering future-proof technology to users of grayscale stereo displays from display technology leaders such as Siemens Display Technologies, Image Systems, and Clinton Electronics Corporation, this one-of-a-kind graphics card features two channels: one with a high-quality BNC connector for unequaled grayscale monitor support, and another with both a DVI and hardware stereo connector for standard color display support. These two channels bring flexibility to intelligence/reconnaissance/surveillance workstations by enabling users to view sensitive imagery on both grayscale and color monitors, displaying images with higher contrast and detail.

"The Parhelia Precision SGT has been expressly designed to bring greater precision and flexibility to those analyzing satellite imagery," says Alain Thiffault, senior product manager, 3D workstation products, Matrox Graphics Inc. "The launch of this product marks a new focus for Matrox as we begin to deliver more specialized engineering technology, based on COTS, for military requirements."

A single-slot PCI solution, the Parhelia Precision SGT is highly scalable as it can be used alongside other specialized AGP or PCI Matrox graphics cards, such as the Parhelia HR256 for enhanced visualization on 9 mega pixel panels, in the same system for enhanced workstation setups. This unique card features 256 MB of on-board DDR unified memory; a PCI interface with support for 33 MHz and 66 MHz buses; high meantime before failure (MTBF); FanAlert, for added system security, which advises the system administrator if the fan malfunctions; power consumption that is compatible with a standard PCI bus; and currently offers full support for Microsoft® Windows® 2000 and Windows XP. Please inquire about other operating system support, versions of this product with genlock and frame lock capabilities, and supported grayscale stereo displays at: www.matrox.com/mga/products/p_sgt/home.cfm.

No new chip for a while / ever then, for consumers.

Yeah, it looks like Matrox is really going in a different direction... But the writing has been on the wall for quite some time.

Sadly, I really doubt we'll seen any meaningful 2D/3D consumer card from Matrox any time soon, if ever...

It is not even a rumour; here are Haigs comments on it:

I don't know what it means for the regular user in the retail market but I don't think that we will be announcing products for that market as much as we will for our main focus markets.

its really pretty weird, a company which ultimately produced/s the best consumer products , no longer finds itself able to compete in that field, Mill 1 and 2 , G200 (pretty much up there_, and G400 were all class leaders, yet matrox never had massive market penetration to the extent ATI and Nvid do today. I dare say if ATI or Nvid had marketed the parhelia, it would have been a success - given that all that it was competing against was the GF4 at the time. Really is a pity to see such innovation dissapear from the consumer graphics hardware market. now i know matrox has gone all speciality on us, but im sure they would rather be selling bucketloads to OEM's and consumers than a few really expensive speciality products to traders and medical people.
is a flower best picked in it's prime or greater withered away by time?

Maybe it is the profit margin on one speciality card is equivalent to selling 100 consumer cards etc !!! Who's gonna have more success XGI or Matrox. If they have any engineers left, bet they are working on the Longhorn generation graphics card, ableit slowly.!!
