    Zalman ZM80D + Parhelia

    I juste bought that Zalman cooler to make my Parhelia 8X quiet. I read on the forum that the first version couldn't cover all the GPU. This latest version fits perfectly, it covers all the surface of the heatspreader.

    About the cooler itself :

    Pros:
    - It looks very high quality !
    - Very good bundle (they even provide the screwdriver)
    - Very complete manual.
    - Noiseless (even with the optional fan)
    - Goog cooling perf (I haven tried games yet)
    - Should adapt to any card that has mounting holes.

    Cons :
    - Installation is a pain in the a..
    - It's heavy for the card, You don't want to move the PC too often
    - It takes a lot of room and might interfer with hard drive connectors
    - Installation is a pain the a.. (yes I know I already said that)
    - Voids your warranty

    I'll post some updates with pictures and comments on temperatures after playing games...

    OK little update. Still no picture

    But I played a few games and the heatsink stays really cool, even after a few houres of gaming.
    So I deceded to overclock. So far I'm at 300 core and 350 memory. Breaking 1292 @ 3DMark 2K3

    For the moment it seems stable, haven't had any issue or artifact...

    That's a real good product !

        Hi PAugustin,

        I am going to buy that cooler. My Parhelia is 4x (not 8x). So I have a question. What is the heatspreader dimension of Parhelia 8x? Is it smaller than P 4x? I used to previous version of Zalman (ZM80C-HP) with OP1 fan. It doesn't cover all the surface of the heatspreader. I experienced a lot of BSODs without O/C.

        In fact I will be very grateful for information about dimensions of that small Zalman's heatsink which sticks directly to the HS.

          I'll have to check the size this evening, but I don't think P4x and P8x have different heatspreaders.

          And as far as I know, there is only one version of the ZM80D-HP...

            nice job man, any luck in getting the core above 300?
            is a flower best picked in it's prime or greater withered away by time?

              Yes it's currently running at 320core and 350mem.
              I tried 350/370 but it crashed quickly under 3Dmark. I'm not sure why but my PSU might be too small for this (380w Antec)

              I'm going to try higher core and leaving the memory at that level, maybe I can reach the synchro...

              FLITH : I haven't measured the Parhelia's heatspreader as I don't want to take the zalman off but the Zalman hetspreader measure : 3,7cm x 3,4 cm.

                OK I can't get higher than 320/350. The max core allowed by powerstrip is 333mhz so I don't think it would make a big difference.


                My 3DMark result at this speed is 1318...

                  Now I know that any speed increase on a matrox product is wonderful, but what was your 3D Mark score before? More importantly, can you play on different quality or res settings than before on any recent game, or does it make photoshop faster etc etc?

                  I guess what I mean is, was it worth it?

                    Well the first scor I got was 1063. So that's a 20% increase for a 20% increase in core/memory clock.

                    And it does run games faster. I don't have any other bench right now but I was able to increase resolution and/or details on NFSU and Prince of Persia (haven't tested anything else right now).
                    I'll have to bench photoshop too

                      i have the zm80c on a 4x P and it has all worked great for 6 months or more. even tho the heat spreader doesn't cover the full gpu surface it oc's to 230 and is an oem card.
                      P4b@2.7, AOpen ax4spe max II, 4X Parhelia 128 with Zalman zm80c and fan -or- ATI Radeon X800GTO, 1024mb.

                        Zalman products are good.
                        I am using ZM-GWB1 watercool block for Parhelia 256m.

                          Yes they do make very nice cooling products !

                          One minor downside, the fan is very loud at 12v, but it handles the Parhelia perfectly at 5v, but I think passive cooling is not a good idea here.

                            I have P4X(not 8X) and I use ZM80A with my P.
                            As I know, P4X's chip is larger than P8X. so Zalman's VGA Cooler cant cover full of P4X's GPU.
                            80A, 80C and 80D's heatspreaders have same dimension.
                            I asked to Zalman for this problem, they said "It cant cover full of GPU, but it is no problem for cooling"
                            so I use 80A, it works perfectly. (4 month or more..)

                              Oh,I'm also using ZALMAN.
