      my matrox history started
around 1993 (ISA), tbh i dont even remember the name of the card
than i switched to ET4000 Vesa Local Bus and
around 1995 i bought the first mystique mainly because matroxs driver support for OS/2 ! IT was shining while the ATI Stealth64 (or what its name was) was a great disapointment driver wise, and matrox used to be famous for their driver quality back to that time!!)
since than my graphic card history went on with
      a
      matrox millenium pci (still os/2)
      matrox g200 combined with a 3dfx voodoo1, (win 95/nt)
      matrox g400 MAX(win nt,98,2000,linux)

year 1999-2002 i used in my main rig in a multi monitor system
1x nvidia geforce agp, than geforce 2 gts, than geforce 3, geforce 4600..
      1x matrox millenium pci
      2x matrox mystique pci
for 4 monitor display under win2k.

some things never change, and while i dont need multimonitors on my desk anymore (and 1x 21" sony is ok now) i have in my shuttle sn41g2 an ati 9800pro (gaming/win2k) and a matrox g400 pci for all 2d activities. i switch between the cards with the input selector of the monitor.
as i mainly work under gentoo linux the 9800pro is usually complete inactive.

neverless if i would ever upgrade i would buy nvidia for their linux comitment. - depending on its quality maybe the matrox would still stay in its pci slot for 2d application use.

but is this enough for a company to survive?
      hm

Got a genuine Parhelia for almost 2 weeks now. Kind of retired my trusty old Marvel G400 to the secondary rig.
Anything from G200 to G450 at work powering displays for Inscriber CG, Avid Xpress Meridien and Avid Media Composer.

TV-out of the most fancy gamers-cards still sucks compared to even an ancient Matrox. I´ll probably take a MGA-card with me in my grave!

        Terratec Cynergy 600 TV/Radio
        Maxtor 80GB OS and Apps
        Maxtor 300 GB for video
        Plextor PX-755a DVD-R/W DL
        Win XP Pro

No, Use a 9800Pro AIW. Was going to use a G200 in my HTPC, but since HDTV res looks so nice, had to use a 9600 Vanila.

Well, I just pulled the AGP parhelia and went back to the G450!

I run tripplehead with an AGP G450 and a G450 PCI so I can get independent desktops rather than stretched on 3x 19" CRTs.

I never use anything 3D so there is no real difference in performance between using the Parhelia or the G450 as the dual AGP cart - yet the P was an addiitonal fan and a lot more heat........ so out she goes... its sad for me that the card I waited years for is now on a shelf.

I'd take a QID as my next upgrade just to get off the PCI bus and free up a slot.

I still fire up the G200 Mill with G200Runner, G200 DVD etc. every now and then - it is my best analog capture unit still - not for the scratchy tape stuff though.
They are still in an old P2-450 - runs just like the day the drivers were properly hacked to run properly.

I never had the money to buy Matrox when they were doing great cards like the Millenium and 400. I have used the Mystique 170 for a long long time though, with much pleasure. It's been ATi for me for a while now. But lo and behold, at work I just got upgraded from a Dual PIII-700 to a single PIV-2.66 and guess what it has inside? Yep, a G450MMS - 4 screens.

I am still using the Marvel G400-TV 16MB in my main PC (Athlon XP 2500+ 512MB) primarily because I use the card daily for video capture.

Unfortunately, the card won't play any games beyond Quake3 / Elite Force / Jedi Academy / Unreal 2003 (some maps lose their texture). It definately won't play Doom 3. I also have frequent problems capturing in WinXP; so I still dual-boot into Win98se.

I want to upgrade my video display card to a nice Radeon or GeForce and switch to a different video capture card that:

                  1. Supports Windows XP
                  2. Is a stand-alone PCI, USB or Firewire card
                  3. Preferably is not dependent on drivers (I've been burned too many times when the OS is no longer supported)
                  4. Captures in Full-D1 (720x480 60fps)
                  5. Has comparable capture quality as my G400-TV

I've tried various tuner cards (ATI HDTV Wonder, All-In-Wonder, Dazzle DVC, etc) and they are not as good IMO. I'm looking at the Canopus ADVC-50, 55, 100 and 110 as a possible solution. The quality is excellent from the reviews I've read and captures in DV format with A/V locking; but it is expensive and doesn't have a tuner. So, I'm still using my Matrox card.

As an alternative, I may just put together a PC with the G400-TV running Win98se and used exclusively for video capture. Maybe when I next upgrade my machine.

                    Why change?

My main machine has a P650 and two others have G400 Max.

They have always been reliable and I haven't found a game that I want to play that won't run on them.

                    • I just wanted to escape from Matrox and bought a Nvidia 6600 GT. Removed my P750 and put that card in. After some driver work, I finaly get the same setup as with the Matrox : flat digital panel on head 1 (1280x1024) and TV in RGBS on head 2 (720x576) (Nvidia drivers are not bad after all).

I browsed a bit on the flat panel while watching a DVD on the TV for 2 hours. Then, suddenly black screen on both screens ! The 6600 GT was dead. That card was 4 hours alive !

So I put back the Matrox P750 in that PC (it is my prime machine) and I think it will stay there for an additional couple of years.

I my wife's PC there is a G400 for some year now, and still working.

At work my office PC has an onboard G100 or G200. The power is on there 24/7.

                          • Started on the Millenium, then Millenium2, Spent some time on a Diamond Stealth for a while, then back to Matrox with G550 (current card). Probably going to move to a p650 soon.

I love that Matrox cards "just work". I take it for granted till I sit on someone elses PC and notice odd things that I've never seen on my home machine.

                            • I still use my G400 marvel.......

I have one on my p4 2.4 1gb ram etc, really new(ish) machine and a card thats years old!

                              I have a carPc (info forums@ mp3car.com) which is g400 marvel powered.

I am going to build a HTPC to replace my dvd recorder, and I am currently bidding on ebay for another g400 marvel to build around.......

It records TV fine, it plays tv out fine, the dual head makes life so simple.

I just dont think these cards have been beaten, unless you know different......
