when the fan on the P750 snuffed it, I was already using *nix more and more.
Settled on a 6600GT, nice easy simple to use nix drivers, stretched screen (twinview).

Last time I went into windows was for some UT2k4 fun.

Good cards, just not doing what I want. which is *just work* in linux

    • Depends, all my work machines have MGI. My main work system runs an APVe.

My home PC runs an X700.

          • Millennium PCI for backup. Luckely I only had to use it just a couple of times for bios recovery, beside that it was plugged inbetween upgrades, after I sold my main card.

I still find the prices outrageous here, even for the G550 (160$ ).

            • I know it's been a while since my last post. But this thread brings back memories from the past :-). The G400MAX was my first purchase on the internet. And I have spent hours in front of my computer struggling with OPENGL ICDs, wrappers, drivers, utilities as well as reading every single review on the net which included a matrox card.

My sister's PC still has a G550 plugged into the mobo's AGP port... My G400MAX is now hapilly residing in a gentoo server box, which I recently upgraded. An old S3 Trio PCI I had must have died so I had to use my g400 instead...

                • I think matrox are missing a chance at a market share here, but cards like the marvel were damn good in their time, and still today work /better/ on dual display than any card I tried last year. ( a friend was a geek gamer so I used to borrow his sytem he had a new gfx card every few month!)

Thats why I run a matrox in my carpc (yeah I geeked my ride...) because I can have gps apps running up front, along with my phone control software, and the kids in the back get to watch nemo etc off dvd and no matter what I do on the front, nothing but pure dvd goes out the rear, never a glitch.

The in thing at the moment is 'carPC' and home theatre.

Modern motherboards are now faster and so are the HD transfers.

If matrox 'cobbled' together a marvel like card with 2 tuners, bolted a moderate chipset onto it for the vga out and gave it native HDTV support, who would buy anthing else ?

If they made the tuner modular, so you could buy a addon tuner for your countrys digital standard etc then its a killer

Matrox has the research into this already done on earlier cards, it could be out in no time and capture a niche market.

I'd love some company to produce a card like that.

Software should not scare them, just bundle it with a sdk and support for it will happen, the only comercial software I run on my system is XP, the rest is all wrote by individuals with a passion for writing good software that works

Oh, I've had a Mystique too... in a P200 MMX-sys... and liked it... the first card I really purchased with thinking about it (because it was for my first self arranged sys ^^, in my 486er DX33 before there worked a Cirrus Logic whatever...)
Played HL and Unreal on this one...

Today I'm still using my P4x 128 retail, but the next days my P8x 128 should arrive (got a cheap used one)...
