  • Matrox G400 Max - Still Viable?

My system is set up primarily for Photoshop and digital video editing/rendering. Current card is an OEM ATi Radeon 8500. I have an opportunity to swap the ATI for a Matrox G400 Max.

Whadayathink? Good choice, or should I look at a different card?

For those uses I'd go with a G400 over most cards, when using a separate capture card. It's awesome for photochopping, and still has the better TV-Out support than most anything out there (last of the external Maven chips, great for video/preview work)...

I still find my G400 a viable card for many uses. My old G400 is still in daily use in my office rig, pulling 2D cad, photo editing, and daily desktop/web duties in DualHead mode. For my uses, I wouldn't swap it for anything, cept maybe a P based card...

I use a G400 in my general use web-surfing machine (soon to be a G400 Max). 2D image quality is excellent. I agree with everything Kruzin says.

The G400 Max just gives you a little faster speed (something like 20%) on 3D over the G400 (the Max has a faster clock).

You could even use a G400 for your purpose. Just be sure it is a Dual Head version.

If you're playing (and care about) anything released post-2001 on that box, keep the Radeon. Otherwise, swap.

Actually, swap anyway and do your gaming on a different machine.
