  • G400 MAX without fan

My fan died on my G400 MAX so I removed it. Now I use it without fan because I couldnt
find a similar fan at a shop

I would say that I have quite good cooling in my box... However I use quite high resolution,
1792x1344x32 @ 75 Hz. It has worked fine for about one week now. Should I get a fan
anyway or can I continue to use it without any fan?

Obviously the setup is working in the short term. Long term is what you have to be concerned with since that heatsink is designed to work with a fan.

If you can lay your hands on a G400 (Non-MAX) heatsink that might provide adequate cooling since it is a passive design. While not as good as the fan model it is a better alternative to running the existing non-working active heatsink.
Perspective cannot be taught. It must be learned.

There are plenty of fans you could get to work on the card, or you could go whole hog and replace the heatsink fan with a larger heatsink for passive cooling.

I would definelty recommend NOT running the max in that state...you should be okay as long as your don't run any 3d stuff...but still you are likely to burn your max out at some stage

meh. After working with some Voodoo3's lately I'd say you aren't likely to burn it out. Nothing gets hot in comparison with a Voodoo3 with no fan. Well, that's not true. I once had a fan die on a Radeon 9700PRO. OMG, that sucker was burning the PCB it was so hot.

I wouldn't really worry too much about it. As long as you don't get visual artifacts you are probably fine.

I dont run any 3D stuff at all, only 2D.
hmm, not sure what I should do. Get a fan or not.

            1. Im a bit worried how the card will feel during the summer when it could be 30C in my apartment.

            2. I dont have any G400 heatsink so... If I would get something it would be a fan.

You could also downclock the card using PINs...

A couple of years ago, I outfitted my G400 MAX with a Zalman ZM50-HP passive cooler http://www.zalmanusa.com/usa/product...idx=4&code=013 (I don't know if they sell this product anymore). It's worked fine ever since.

I have been running my G400 MAX with its fan plug pulled off the PCB (heatsink is still on it) for well over 2 years now. I use it mainly in my HTPC. Its at 1024x768x60Hz 32bit color. Its only connection is to a TV. Its the most stable PC I have in my "collection" of PC's. Go figure. It is located about 2 inches away from the cooling vent holes on my Shuttle SB51G case, so maybe that helps it.
                  Go Bunny GO!
