  • Quake II Problems

Why doesn't matrox say anything about A fix for the matrox G400 drivers for quakeII? It Just locks my computer up hard in open GL mode. I've tried all the driver versions and messed with vsync and all the other tweaks, and still nothing, has to be the G400

Since so many of us are able to play Q2 on our G400s, I hardly think you can say "It's got to be the G400".

I would say it's more likely a setup issue, either with the game, or your system.

It would be more helpful if you could detail your system, including IRQ status, OS, and hardware used, and how the game is configured.

Also, what kind of card did you use for Q2 before you got the G400?

Pentium II 400 clocked to 498 mhz
      WD 8gig
      96 mg memory
      windows 98
      asus P2B motherboard
      Intel 440 BX AGPset
      Matrox G400 DH
      Running 1024x768 16 bit
      Irq 10 all by itself

Had a ATI 128 All in wonder pro before

Have tried 5.13, 5.15, 5.21, same result with all of them.
Have tried setting aperture size, tried APG 1x, messed with vsync, tried different resolutions and refresh rates still no luck.

I would try going into the bios, and diabling USCW, and maybe slow down the RAM settings a little.

I'd also try removing one of your memory modules, and trying them individually. Obviously, with 96meg, you have some mixed RAM in there. At your high FSB, that's often hard to pull off.

Then I'd clock to the processor down. 124FSB is bound to be pushing the RAM and anything on the PCI bus (including hard drives) pretty hard.

Here's the real issue ---> I have built "randals" machine, as well as mine (I own a comp retail store). Both him and I are experiencing the same problems. Quake 2 runs flawlessly in OPENGL in a single player game. Add the modem access for online play and the game freezes with a modem disconnect appearing. The freezing varries in length and ussually resumes on it's own (lasting approx 5-10 seconds). The lock-ups occur at differeing intervals. I have found a pattern ------> the maps seem to freeze when moving thru specific locations. I have tried to mess with the "in game" menu's to see if this would have any effects (8-bit textures, etc...)
There are no system/device conflicts. The game has ran very well in the past with the G200. Hard Disk was reformatted with a fresh OS load (98SE). 5.2x Drivers, also fresh.

I love the card...... MS Combat Flight Sim is flawless at 1280X1024 32bit, albeit a borring game, but beautifull non-the-less.

As far as pointing the finger at the G400 ... Randall is correct. The only change to his system has been that card. The fact that we can reproduce the same issue on machines that are of the same hardware and those that are different isolates the G400 as the originator.

The question at hand still remains. My thinking is that there probably is either a game setting/command or a system setting that needs to be changed. We just don't know what that change may be.

PS. we know of the AGP1x

          thanks for any help

This is a game issue, not G400 specific.

What you are seeing is caused by high frame rates. You need to limit the frames to limit the network packets sent/recieved.

            In Q2, adjust 2 variables:
            rate "3500"
            cl_maxfps "30"

This will limit the packets tranfered, and get rid of the phone jack icon.

Assuming I can trust ParaDygm's description, you probably have a problem because of the high framerate, which you will need to limit. In the quake2 console, type "cl_maxfps 30" to limit the framerate to 30 fps. It will take a second for things to clear up if you are already connected. You may also need to lower this value for slower modems/worse ISPs. Of course, for single player you don't want this limited, so you may want to revert to the default value (90, I think).

I can't even run quakeII in single player off my HD in openGL it locks my computer up hard. I tried the 32mg aperture setting but still nothing, works fine in all modes except openGL. I am running the 5.13 drivers because 5.21 seemed to make my machine do wierd things.

I have capped the frame rate, but not the bandwidth... i'll give it a try. I've become so rusty with quake 2 commands ... it's hard to keep up.
                  thanks fellas

The frame rate cap did the trick.
                    thanks again
