  • What the HELL is wrong with Half-Life?! snif

Ok, heres the deal. (yes i'm new but i need help!)

Every single time I want to play Counterstrike, I'm running around doing something and then suddenly it will FREEZE. Just sits there and looks at me funny until I reboot. This happens every time in at least 5-10 mins into gameplay. This is a real piss off for me. I run it at 1024x768 using OPENGL.

I just bout the G400 hoping that this baby would solve all my problems, and reading the rave reviews said so. Now I have it, and it turns out even worse than my old ATI Rage Pro. At least THAT ran Halflife.

People, I can't return this card... and I'm very mad at the moment because I can't play my favorite game because Matrox doesn't want to write a decent enough driver. One that doesn't freeze would be nice.

If anyone could help me with this problem with Halflife, please do because I'm out of ideas. I've tried installing the 5.13, 5.25 drivers.. i've tried using the new ICD, using the old ICD.. i've tried turning off decals, sound, eax, everything and I'm just clueless. Please help if you can, i'm beggin ya. I WANT this to be a great card, but it's not being very convincing right now.

    PIII 500
    128 RAM
    10 Gig HD
    Matrox G400 MAX
    Win98
    DVD Drive
    SB LIVE! Value
    Motorola Cable Modem
    Yamaha CDRW
    Intel Motherboard
    Sony Trinitron Multiscan 400PS Monitor

What else!??! Please lend a helping hand.. as you can see i'm desperate.

If you look farther down the list, and into last week, you will see some threads about HL. Anything I could suggest would be there already. There is a lot of info in about 5 threads there...

But, as I look at your post again, I would also suggest checking for overheating. If it locking up after a short period of time like that, heat is always a possibility...

          Hello.
Do your other EAX-enabled games crash? I'm quite certain your SBLive! is conflicting with the G400. I've exactly the same problem as you. Everytime I play an EAX game, it'll crash once an EAX-enabled sound is played.

I noticed that my G400 and SBLive! Value share the same IRQ (9), but changing the IRQ still doesn't help. So, the solution is... disable bus mastering! Simple! Go to the PowerDesk options and uncheck the 2nd last box from the bottom (bus mastering). Games run quite a lot slower without bus mastering, but that's the best solution so far, at least until Matrox does something about it (I've already mailed tech support).

Check out my earlier post on this matter at http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/Forum5/HTML/004606.html

Turning off BM will slow the card down a bunch. You'd be better off not using EAX.

I have a Live! in my system, and what you describe has never been a problem for me...

I have SB Live also and it hasn't been a problem. Do you have the latest update?
It's up to Liveware 2.1 now. I'm thinking of putting my v2 back in for Half-Life since I can't seem to tweak my g400 SH 32 enough to get more than 5fps in complex scenes.
But the graphics sure are amazing. And thanks to all those who posted those tweaks to improve the performance(gl_texsort 1,mgatweak utility, etc.)-it did help. I guess I am going to have to order one of those Kryotech Athelon 800mhz puppies to push this g400!

Thanks for all the suggestions people, but none have really helped so far. I find it kind of retarded if I have to disable EAX just for something else to work. I mean, why would I buy a SBLive just to disable it's features? Doesn't make sense.

I guess I'll try adding another Fan to the G400, and I fool around some more, but it is still crashing... and yes I do have all the updated drivers you can think of. *sigh* this sucks...

It even crashes in D3D... just tested that today. To be honest it crashes in Q3A sometimes too so overheating might be a problem, but the G400 is still at its default clock speed, i haven't o'clocked it or anything.. what gives.

Try forcing AGP 1X using the Registry Hacks. Also disable all shadowing in your BIOS.
