  • Outcast runs very slow

I've got a G200 and an AMD K6-3 450 and Outcast only runs about 10fps at best at 514x384 (the game's highest detail setting). What gives? Anyone else tried this game? I got it because of the great reviews just about everywhere, but none of the reviews said anything about running slow. Is this just more poor programming for AMD's?

It's a software rendering only game, being a voxel engine and all. So your K6's FPU is not good enough for it. It doesn't run all that well even on P2-450 which has a much stronger FPU. You'd need latest P3s and Athlons to enjoy the game.

The FPU in a PII is the same as the one in the PIII, so if it won't run well in your OC'ed PII 450, will it run on anything? The game even claims to be 3dNow! optimized. It does run much faster at 400x300, but then you can't read the words on the screen because they are too tiny and the lower resolution can't print them clearly.

Has anybody out there tried this game on a PIII 500 or better. I would be curious to see if the faster FPU really helps. I know that the voxel based engine is essentially a 2D scheme that doesn't need acceleration and was developed before 3D hardware acceleration was widely available. But I don't know how much it relies on FPU calculations to work properly. The FPU's weren't that strong either back when the engine was developed.
