  • UTDEMO348 scores

I am Averaging about 51 FPS on the new UTDEMO348. I left everything at default (which sets everything to high detail). I changed the resolution to 1024x768.

    My system:

    P3-450, 128 megs ram, G400 Max

    Anybody want to compare scores?

    Thanks,

    Sean

Let me also note that the timedemo will yield high fps when the game is first started. For an accurate measure of frames, you need to play the game for a descent amount of time and stay in combat. After a few tests it appears that I am getting between 51-53 fps.

Note: I am using 16 bit textures.

    Thanks,

    Sean

could you please post instructions for running ut timedemo(s)?

and where do you guys find out how to do timedemos in the first place?

      thx eh

        Hi Scotty,

First go into tools and select Timedemo Statistics. Next start a practice session. By default the first map is "Morpheus" and 4 bots are enabled. While the precaching screen is on, start pressing any key randomly so that the game will start immediately. If you don’t start immediately the fps will go to an unrealistically high rate and stay there. On the top corner of the screen you will see a display of the highest, average, and low fps. At the moment I am measuring average fps. Take note that the game will start with very high fps. You need to stay in battle for a good 5 minutes or more to accurately measure your framerate. Remember when you go off by yourself places the framerates skyrocket up and that average is not accurate.

        Thanks,

        Sean

I am getting 51-53 FPS at 32 bit 60-61 16bit same settings as you. G400 Vanilla 32MB clocked to 148.5/198, P3 450 @558. everything on high, 8 bots. I cannot believe the difference, with the previous version I turned of detail textures to get better framerate. I haven't checked yet but it looks like detail textures may now be turned off by default in D3D, but it looks great, whatever. In 16bit it is now faster than my V 3000 was in Glide.

I am beginning to suspect they turned down the texture detail in the new UTDemo. I started up Unreal just to compare and the detail textures looked just as pretty as before but in UTDemo 348 they looked a little dumbed down (if you know what I mean). I think that the new Minimum Frame Rate (default set to 28) may have a hand in this. It may turn down your graphics settings to meet the minimum FPS specified. This is just a guess, though...

Have I gone blind or did they remove the menu item to bring up Advanced Options as well? I had to manually edit the config file to turn on Trilinear.

Jerrohd, You wouldn't believe the bitchin on the UTchat amongst everyone trying to locate the Advanced Options on the 348! hehe. Everyone running around like a chook with their head cut off trying to find it!
Then someone discovered that you must goto the console within the game and type:
              preferences
              That doest it!
BTW. I used to get a BIG slowdown Maximum texture and Detail settings.
Now on the same settings I dont get that kind of slowdown.
Not much difference that I could see in playability between min and max settings. FPS seem to indicate the same thing. I had tripple buffer off and false for use v-sync.
              Anyone else?

                Hi,

Nikos: Ditto, it does appear that they turned off the detail textures. Yes, the optimizations have really sped up this demo in Direct3D and with HUD on. Sweet.

Jerrohd: The textures do appear a little "dumbed" down since the detail textures setting appears to be off. This demo though looks allot better with detail textures off then the last one did. Visuals look great. I think that having Trilinear filtering on could make up some for the detail texture setting being off. What kind of frame losses are you getting with it on?

Frank: I don't know what they were thinking when they yanked out the advanced option. Luckily, you can manually access it.

This is supposedly the last demo before the full game is released.

                Thanks,

                Sean

                  P3-450, 64mb RAM, MX300 sound card, G400 32mb Dual Head.

I've got UT set to medium textures, 800x600, 32 bit colour. Getting about 43 fps. My old Voodoo 2 made it to 51 fps in Glide mode but 32 bit colour does look nicer. I'm really hanging out for RAM prices to come down so I can go to 128 mb.

Out of curiosity, would people recommend Open GL or Direct 3d for UT?

                    Hi Mormegil,

Make sure that you have the newly released 348 version of Unreal Tournament. The overall texture quality is better with 32 bit, but Unreal Tournament seems to look pleasantly brighter/faster with using 16-bit color depth. These days you need 128 Megs ram minimum to run games at their full potential.

                    Thanks,

                    Sean

                      Hi Mormegil,

Use Direct3D for non-3DFX video cards.

                      Thanks,

                      Sean

I only play at 800x600x16, A3D (v1) enabled. I think anything higher than that is acceptable only for local bot matches with less than 8 bots.

Sean, at this time there's no meaningful way to compare scores, so why not make a demo recording available for download and ask again?

                          Hi Scytale.

I don't have 3d hardware sound enabled. With the same settings mentioned above I am getting 43-45 fps with 8 bots and 37 fps with 16 bots. The fps is rather acceptable. I do agree using 800x600 is a respectable, but in this demo you can't enable detail textures. By not enabling detail texture in 800x600 you will notice more of a difference in visuals between that and 1024x768. Some how I don’t trust the "Wicked" demo since it was done on a 3DFX card. I wonder if it the demo actually records the settings the author was using and overrides your current settings? Anybody know? UTDEMO348 players, whom want to make a timedemo, please download a even newer patch at:

Hi. At 1024x768x16 I get similar average scores, but lowest frame rate scores will drop to below 20, it may even get as bad as 12 (that was measured with 338 though).

Scores (lowest FPS in particular) get better with 3D sound disabled, but I like to hear what's going on around the corner. So in the end I ditch all the pretty stuff in favor of survival rating. It's bad enough as it is...

Thanks, everyone! I appreciate the answers about the advanced options and the "dumbed down" textures. I love the new frame rate I am getting.
