  • Anyone playing AOE?

More large chunks of my life are again being wasted by this game. I'd like to see if anyone would like to play a game somtime? I still need time to get the hang of this game.
    Its a great one

Shrug. A friend of mine plays _EVERY_ strategy game that comes out, so I gave it a shot, and had the exact same reaction I did with C&C 2. After being burned out on Warcraft2 and Starcraft, RTS games just do nothing for me. Despite the fact that both C&C2 and AoE2 had some really nice new features, especially AoE2, I got bored with it waaaayyyy too fast. Just felt like more of the same.
      Sigh. =)
I hope Warcraft 3 can change all of that...

Echo|Fox: It sounds like you need some balance in your gaming life! Try overdosing on a couple of FPS's, and you'll soon come running back to AoE2 for more.

I was pleasantly surprised by AoE2, because not only have the graphics improved dramatically, but because the gameplay has become that bit more sophisticated, and it still runs OK at 1024x768 on my mate's P233!!!

Of late, playing the original AoE has seemed a bit like going through the motions. Everyone online knows what you have to do to be competitive. There are about 6 main tactical options (most of which involve upwards of 10 catapults!) and the outcome is mainly decided on what resources are near to your town and who attacks who first.

Nice to have a breath of fresh air!

I feel that this series is the best. I really am sick of FPS and ALL games for that matter. Its all the same. I wish someone could create a "New" idea for the PC in the Multimeadia/Games. But back to AOE, I looks great on a G400 and it is still a great way to beat you friends ass with a little skill.
I would like to get a Murc game up.

Dude, count me in. I've been playing since the beta...got a friend that works at MS

The new AI is a killer!! My 3 friends and I play it on a LAN. We've become profiecient enough that we can beat 3 computer players at the Hardest setting. Now onto the 4 on 4!!

We played the Hell out of AOE and ROR too.

                That sounds cool.

You'll have to excuse the fact that I'm a newbie to actually playing games on-line. I play all the time on LAN, but have never ventured to the on-line world.

Well, Age is the way to go on the Net. It only pauses for a couple of seconds and thats fine because in FPS games you die instantly unless you dump piles of cash into a connection In Age everybody stops to catch up and there is no real difference.

It does seem to be a nice game.

I think there needs to be a difficulty setting between medium and hard. I'm playing 3 computer opponents on hard and can win only if I start with an abundance of resources around and an easily defendable territory.
Once I find such a setup, taking out 3 CPUs doesn't seem too tough. Actually, I think I'll try the hardest setting (very hard?) and see if I can consistently beat 3 CPUs given a defendable starting position.

Without a defendable starting position and sufficient resources, the 3 computer players easily swamps you, even only on hard setting. It seems they ally or something pretty early in the game. They hardly seem to fight one another.

I'm hoping the difficulty setting only affects the AI, but somehow I doubt that. My guess is that the AI setting biases starting resources, resource gathering, or cost of produciton in the computer's favour. Oh well.

Actually, I just talked to my friend at MS and this is what he said about the AI. At Easy and Easiest, the computer cannot advance to Imperial Age. Other than that, the increase in difficulty is just AI adjustment. The only time resources come into play, is at Hardest, where the computer starts out with more.

IMO, this is much better than Starcraft, where the computer knows where all the resources and the enemies (i.e. YOU) are located.

                          Cool!

Thanks for the info Electric Amish.

This is the type of thing that would have been really informative in the manual or something, not that I read those things much.

I find it more worthwhile wasting chuncks of my life on a game, as Lamfdtk put it, when the AI doesn't "cheat".

I must agree, the AI does seem a bit more "adaptable" in this game than in most. I noticed last night that the computer players started building fleets shortly after I built one. Before then, it mostly concentrated on land forces. Won't do the computer much good though. I've already passed the point where I know I can beat the 3 CPUs. Anyway, it's great to see that the AI can actually adapt, if indeed that's what it's doing.
