I could have got my hands on a GeForce256 DDR for less than i paid for my MAX, but i wanted dual monitors. The card is definatly fast enough for all resaonable applications ( you cant run qIII at high detail, 1600 x 1200, at 60+fps. BUT WHO GIVES A S**T) and the 2d quality is great. A couple of my friends are considering getting one after they use the dual head for more than 5 minutes at my house.

At first, I was wondering if i've done the good choice (between tnt2, voodoo 3 3000 or G400)
But now I know I've done the good thing with my G400 single head
One of my friend waned to by a TNT2, showed my G400, changed is mind, bought a G400 dual head, and is, like me, VERRRRRY happy with it

I didn't really have much of a choice as the card came with the computer - but since i have had serious problems with running OpenGL games, I will prolly replace it with a GeForce!

I know I am stupid, but, what does OpenGL give you in games? I run Unreal, UT, Quake 2, Quake 3, in D3D or the Matrox icd with no problems. This is on a EPoX MVP3G-M rev 0.4 mother board, K6 III 450, CL Sound Blaster Live, and a ZOOM 2925 LT modem. I get a little lag on internet games, OK I connect at 50k+ to internet because I am less than 10,000 feet to the tel switch.

2D performance is great, picture quality is 2nd to none. Unreal and Quake 2 are great.

Starsiege Tribes however sucks using OpenGL.

The only fault with the G400 is OpenGL drivers. Get 'em sorted Matrox.

I wouldn't say I am sorry to have bought the card, I'm actually very pleased, apart from Starsiege Tribes like I just said.

              WB,
Keep in mind that Tribes wasn't optimized for OGL. Here is the official statement from their website FAQs:
"Currently OpenGL support within Tribes is available, but not “officially” supported. However, there are steps that can help with OpenGL performance and Tribes. Be aware that these optimizations are provided as a courtesy; we cannot guarantee results."

My G400 blows away my old G200.
I am running my PIII 450@504 and still get x2

All I can say is that this is one of the best card I have ever seen to grace the AGP slot in my machine.

For the most part I am glad I bought a MAX...have had some minor troubles here and there, especially when I went to the K7 600...but it turned out the be the mobo...even though they were OpenGL errors...
Anyway, right now, the only card I have seen, in reviews and shoot-outs...that is, is the Ge For in DDR...but try to find one...when I do upgrade to a Ge or Napalm or whatever the schmo 3Dfx is gonna call the V4...I will put my Max on my secondary system (P3 450) which currently has my TNT and a couple V2s running...
I have yet (and I haven't seen a Ge For, so I can't say) to see ANY card with the Visuals (and speed to keep up) that matches the MAx...you need a relatively fast CPU to get the most from the MAX...noticed the diff when I used to OC my P3 450 to 567...big diff...
All in all, I really enjoy it!!! UT is fantastic on it at 1028/768...need that 19" monitor to replaced my 17, thought....get spoiled using a 21incher at work...
                    Have FuN...

I do actually feel sorry that I bought the G400 (The vanilla one, not the max)

This is mainly due to the Drivers, or rather, the lack of proper drivers.

Matrox' lame excuse about "you need the cpu-power of a P-III to use the Turbo OpenGL", is merely a smoke cover for their own lack of programming skills. I run a SMP P-II-450 under NT4SP5. I would think that a Dual p2 450, would outperform any single p3 450 around, wouldn't you?

If matrox doesn't show up with some decent drivers VERY soon, I will remove my G400, and for the future, avoid to recommend Matrox as a supplier for any graphix equipment. Theri hardware may be OK, but their drivers are, at best, crappy.

Sorry? For what? For having one of the best video cards available today? Mmmmmmm, let me see.... Nope, I can´t say I am.

I have only a celeron 450 and it´s more than enough to enjoy the G400. I´ve always loved image quality. I can´t stand 16 bit color. 1024x768x32, 32 bit Z-buffer, trilinear filtering, all the way, whenever I can. And what I found really amusing is that that super-duper G-farce is actually *slower* in 32 bit mode in some benchmarks...

Maybe the OpenGl driver aren´t still up to par with the competition (well, actually they are, 3dfx/ATi/S3 ICD´s have quite of a few bad memories...), but I wouldn´t trade that for trilinear dithering and per-polygon mipmaping. It´s just awfull. The screen looks like it´s full of static in the mipmap borders. Yuck. Someone who cannot see the image quality diference between a TNT and a G400 must be high on something... Good for them they fixed that with the G-spot, though.

Well, my .02 is that in the begining when I forst got the plain dualhead card, It sucked. I only had one monitor at the time, and I was playing Half-Life and TFC exclusivly. And it ran like crap. After I got the second monitor I started to feel better, but was still plagued with disapointment on half-life. As the drivers got updated, it slowly started to get better. Only pity is it took so long for half-life to be playable on my system that I stopped playing it, and now that turboGL FINALLY apeared, I dont play any game that uses it. My time is mostly spent on UT, Homeworld, and Worms Armageddon when I play. I'm kinda glad I couldnt find a MAX cause if I had paid the extra money to have been plagued by all the problems I DID have with a more expensive card, I would have chucked it and gotten a tnt2 ultra. As it stands now, I am happy with the dual monitors, having used them at work on macs for a while, now I am VERY pelased to have them on a single card. However, I do feel Matrox screwed the pooch with drivers. I was one of the people that got a G200 and in disgust, 7 months after I got it, chucked it and got a TNT1. So In the begining, I had a lot of regrets, now I'm happy. Only thing I hope is that when it comes out, I dont have any issues with Team Fortress 2. HEAR THAT MATROX?? Talk to Sierra and make sure the damn drivers work this time :P
A computer is like sex. Your never 100% sure what your doing but when all goes well, it feels REAL good.

Genom: I don´t know if you were aware of that, but adding gl_texsort 1 in the opengl.cfg gives a BIG (almost unbeliveable) boost in performance in HL. I must say I didn´t know that too, but the point is that HL always worked good with the G400 (with a little bit of tweaking)...

                              I love my G400 MAX!
I only wish for improved drivers and more bumpmapped enabled games, and bumpmap-patches for the "old" favorites!

No regrets at all. My single head 32 meg has worked flawlessly. I'm overclocked to 164/206, not too shabby eh?
