  • Quake 3 demo crashes ... randomly!

    Hey guys

Quake 3 runs pretty beautifully in 1024X768 32 bit on my G400. Only one problem: Sometimes during game loading, right about the time the "Awaiting snapshot..." message shows up, it freezes and a repetitive thwack...thwack sound is all that's left. Only way to get out is to hit the reset button.

My IRQ assignments are below to remove any doubts of IRQ conflicts. Also I never had any crashes in Q3test and clocking my Celery at normal speeds did not make a difference.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

    Hi,

I tested it tonight four hours with one lock-up EXACT at this place(awaiting snapshot).
I reboot... I tried many settings but no others lock-ups.

You say 1024x768 x32 pretty beautifully ,smooth ?, please send some benchmarks.
I think your IRQ table is non-conflict, my G40DH32MB has IRQ11.
These "awaiting snapshots " lock-ups are maybe QUAKE 3 TEST DEMO issues.
    Wait for official QUAKE3DEMO.

    bye

Yeah man, I get the same ****en error...and its pissing me off!
Do you have A3D enabled? I do, and I think it may be part of the problem...

I tried inceasing the "snapshots" to max...i think it has lessened the amount of crashes but that could just be me...not really sure if it works...also the turboGL work around doesn't work at all for me...anyways...i'm pretty disappointed with iD...they usually make quite stable games...this demo-test has been _very_ unstable...then again it could be Matrox's fault..who knows?

        hello,

A3d disabled and no ONLINE gaming for me, when this crash (awaiting snapshit "repetitive thwack...thwack sound")occured.

I disabled "Option PURE SERVERS OFF" maybe this caused it, I don`t know, QUAKE3 is TEST DEMO not true DEMO!!!!!

        for my statistic:

Yesterday I ran Quake3 almost 100 times, and two "awaiting snapshit" crash occured.

        Bye

I use to have this problem when I first installed it.

I uninstalled the old Q3 test, then reinstalled the test demo. This fixed it almost totally.

I also noticed that if I had both installed, rouge spear would crash sometimes.

Since doing this I have had one crash that is unaccounted for, and it didnt get the sound repeating, so might have been something different.

                Hi Ali

How exactly did you "uninstall" q3test? I just deleted the folder coz there isn't an uninstallation program -- or is there?

Never saw an uninstall myself (seems to just install by copying files to the directory for 1.08).

I get a similar crash, but only using the turboGL, and only after playing the game for a short period of time (in an actual match, I mean). With the turboGL, the crash occurs every game. I've only crashed once with the standard ICD (when I first ran the latest TEST). It was at the same point, but I didn't hear anything when it did.

www.3dnews.net has a link to a story with a fix, follow the instructions to the letter. Game looks and runs good, feels smoother.

Thanks for the link Midisax. Problem is, that link refers to the resolution problem that has already been discussed in other threads. Moreover, it only affects the TurboGL (I have a Celeron).

I must say, crashes have not been occuring as often. Last 10 times were crash-free... (haven't got too much time to play coz of a busy week).
