Okay, here are my results- dolp!!! For some reason, on my system, the newest TEST locks up when using the OpenGL, after playing for a few. The demos both seem faster under the TurboGL (and with less visual anomalies) at all resolutions to 1024, with everything turned up (4/4 textures, trilinear, 32bit color/textures, etc.). Unfortunately, I can't complete the demos, or even a single game (mp or botmatch). After a given amount of time (varies depending on what I'm doing/how busy the game is), it locks hard, with the audio repeating (usually when someone gets fragged). I do know that demo001(? the one in the old Q3Test1 map) freezes right after the guys in the area where the Quad appears get fragged (right before you do, I believe), every time. So if the game action is the same, it freezes at the same place. Too bad, the turboGL both looks and runs better on my system at 1024. I actually managed to play thru 3 deaths on the new map1 online before it froze last night. I went back to the ICD, and can play okay, but I drop the rez to 800x600, just to get ~35 fps.

My comp is a P3-450 (o.c. to 558). The G400Max isn't overclocked (other than the non-standard AGP speed, though I'm using the 2/3 divider to minimize that too).

Oh well, maybe the next drivers will help.

      Hi ACE,

Ufff, I ran Q3demo "timedemo" maybe 200 times with two locks-up at "awaiting snapshot screen". My AGP divider is too 2/3 112x4 ( original P2 400Mhz ).

I saw at HOT HARDWARE SITE solution for your lock-up troubles.
      http://www.hothardware.com/news/new.html#news http://www.hothardware.com/news/q3config.cfg
      HOT HARDWARE SITE 17.November

One of the Hot Hardware Elite, Tom Jacobs, also a local home-biscuit from Massachusetts, sent us the hook-up on how to get your Matrox G400 running with the new Quake3 Demo Test! It seems there is indeed an issue with starting the game in anything other than 800X600 mode but you can change resolutions
once you are in. Follow Tom's simple instructions and you are dialed brothers and sisters!

1.First re-install the game and place this q3config.cfg (written by Tom "I'm a G400 studd Jacobs") file into your demoq3 sub-folder.
2.Then install the TurboGL drivers using TurboGL manager. That should do it. You will start up at 800x600 in 32bit, so you may want to change that once you are there.
3.Also, don't forget to change back to 800X600 and save your configuration again before you exit,
otherwise you'll probably lock up again the next time you start.

      I wish you GOOD LUCK!!!

        Ace-
I had the same thing happening. To keep it from locking, try turning the sound off:
        s_initsound 0
        snd_restart

        then run you time demo.

Is anybody seeing what I'm seeing??? My turboGL is slower than the reg iCD.

Thanks for the tip, Dude. I actually considered trying this yesterday (after I read Scytale's tip on even getting the game going under the turboGL), but decided I'd rather not spend the time to look for the variable to disable sound (I couldn't remember it), when I could be playing something (in this case UT- MAN! Is that ever addictive.)

Since you were kind enough to do 2 things- 1. Give me the variable name and value to disable it, and 2. Let me know it solved the problem for you- I'll try it tonight. I'm sure I'll post another reply on this topic tomorrow to let you know how it goes.

Were you able to reenable sound at any time later? It's definitely gonna stink not hearing the action (on the other hand, my wife will be pleased- she'll be able to hear the television).

ACE- For my system it's a trade off. I can crank everything to max, but if I have sound on, it locks. I can run with sound if put the details slider to 3/4. Very close to maxed.

An update on the q3config thingy:

<a href="http://www.hothardware.com">Hot Hardware</a> have resolved the q3config mystery, and firmly inserted a gazillion credits to a certain dude known as Scytale and the murc. Hee hee...

So Tom, if you read this - really sorry to have doubted you man. You can rip me and this forum any time...

                        SCYTALE NOW YOU ARE WELL-KNOWN

                        Hot hardware site wrote!!!!!

Hey all... I stopped home over lunch to make this quick correction. It seems I made an error (hard to believe I know) with respect to the proper author of that Q3config.cfg file. Our bud Tom Jacobs informed us that he did not write that file but a visitor of the Matorx Users Forum, Scytale was responsible for its creation.

This was my error since I assumed Tom wrote it, without even asking. WHAT NERVE I have! :-) Anyway, I corrected the post below, KO? Thanks again Tom for sending us the juice on this great fix. Big thanks to Scytale for your masterful coding!

                        best regards

                          OK-
We have a studly legend in our presence. Yah, Yaah, yah... whatever. There is still no answer to my problem.

Why is my TurboGL slower than the regular ICD on my system??? Can you answer that, Mr. Legend???

I've tried updating to the latest BIOS. I've tried disabling fsync. I've tried re- installing software... What else could it be?!?!?!

OK -Here's what I got. I think I found my problem...

Looks like the ICD out performs the TurboGL at the highest resolutions on my system:

                            32-bit color depth, 32-bit textures, demo1
                            640x480: 38.2 (ICD), 55.1 (TurboGL)
                            800x600: 35.9 (ICD), 39.1 (TurboGL)
                            1024x768: 27.1 (ICD), 24 (TurboGL)

                            16-bit color depth, 16-bit textures, demo1
                            640x480: 38.6 (ICD), 62.1 (TurboGL)
                            800x600: 37 (ICD), 57 (TurboGL)
                            1024x768: 35.2 (ICD), 39.3 (TurboGL)

With all settings Maxed at 1024x768
                            (32-bit, 32-bit, tri-linear, slidebar maxed)
                            20 (ICD), 17.7 (TurboGL)

Looks like the ICD does very well at the highest resolutions and beats the TurboGL by a few FPS, but the TurboGL performs much better at lower resolutions.

I like playing at higher resolutins, for now I'm using the ICD.

Note that I have a G400 (non max) with a PIII 500, no overclocking. 128Meg RAM.

DrFizix, I'm glad to see you post Q3 numbers on a non-overclocked system. I also use the Max, PIII 450, and a similar MB (see sig). My hi-res numbers were in par with yours but my lower res numbers were higher (8 FPS in 16-bit). Curious. Perhaps the hi-res modes and color depths are CPU bound while you're low-res numbers are impacted by a slower I/O subsystem. Other explanations?

                              Using TurboGL:

                              Bilevel filtering, 3/4 texture detail:

                              800x600: 53.0 (xortam), 48.9 (DrFizix)
                              1024x768: 35.2 (xortam), 35.4 (DrFizix)

That's interesting. I suspect you're right about the I/O difference. The other thing that's different about our systems is that you're using an MX300 and I have a Soundblaster Live Value. I wonder if the SBLive is hogging resources?
