  • A possible solution to some slwodown problems.

OK, After all my bitching and moaning all the time about how some games play online terribly, I can say I was right to a point. Turns out that for some god unknown reason, on this Asus P2B-F motherboard, my older USR sportster modem is at fault!

    YES! THATS IT DAMMIT.

A couple days ago I was at home screwing around with the machines and stuff and I had an external USR modem with me from the office. Just for the hell of it I decided to use that one to see if I could get an extra slot in the case to reduce power usage since I have an obscene amount of HD's and CD's and DVD's in there, and guess what? everything ran like a charm! (well, UT finall does kinda stutter, but I atribute that to the Unreal engine more than anything, and ahm still gonna try to re-install DX7 and 5.30 just in case), but TFC and OpFor both ran online very smoothly! Same as Q3Demo. For some reason whenever the modem would start working it would actually casue me to lag and drop frames. Isnt this the lamest thing?

Anyway, for everybody with internal modems and having this kinda prob where online play kinda sucks, this just might be it. For the meantine I am looking at getting a USB modem or just a nice PCI one that isnt a winmodem (ew). SO if anybody has any suggestions around here, I'd like to hear them.

Sportsters can be a bear to set up for on-line gaming. I spent weeks trying to get mine working right. It's all down to how the modem is configured. Especially when it comes to features like v.90 (which SUX for gaming).

For those who do have a USR modem, this site has many good tips and tweaks that made all the difference for me...

I used to have probs similar to this. I went with a Diamond pci modem and it was worse. So I got myself a 60 dollar (Canadian) ISA' Jumpered non PnP modem made by AOpen. Had to set it up myself,(windows don't even know it's there until you set it up), but no slowdowns, faster connections and it will let me overclock. Freed up a PCI slot as well. There are new drivers there at www.aopen.com as well to make it even smoother. Good luck.
