  • G400 & QUake 2

I just recently recieved a G400 Millenium 32 Meg DualHead video card from Matrox to review for www.g256.com, but i've run into some problems. When i went to run a timedemo on quake 2, i only got 26 fps.. I know this isn't right cause i use to get like 40 fps with my voodoo2. So i decided to do a clean format and start from scratch. I did so, installed everything and got the same results. I've tried several things with no success. If someone has any ideas or knows what the problem is or maybe... Could you please reply to this post or email me at krider@g256.com

    Thanks

You are running very slow in Quake2. What processor are you using?

Is duel-head enabled? Are you using the drivers that shipped with the board?

If you could give us some details about your system and configuration, it would be helpful.

Check if the G400 isn´t sharing any IRQ and if bus-mastering is enabled. Without bus mastering, you would get numbers like that.

Just to compare, I get 59 fps at 1024x768x16, 32-bit z-buffer, trilinear filtering, with sound on - timedemo 1. That´s with a G400 oc´ed to MAX speeds and a celeron 450 (so I´m not even using turboGL here...)

Oh and your link is bad. Here:

I like the bus mastering theory, although it was enabled by default after every driver install I've done.

Something's wrong, Krider. The G400 likes fast processors, but even with a slow CPU, you should be doing *a lot* better.

I'm running an AMD K6-2 350 with 64 megs of ram. In quake 2 i'm running it at 640 x 480 with 16 bit color. Dual-head is not enabled. No i am not using the drivers that were shipped with the board. I'm using the second newest ones. I didn't put those new ones on yet.

What do you have your max_fps in quake 2 set to? And what do you have your rate set too?

WHere do i find the bus mastering option, is that in the bios?

I'm pretty sure i have it enabled, but i will double check.

Is there a icd that i need for quake 2??

What video mode should i have it on? Default opengl??

I also use an AMD, but mine is K6-2 400, plus a G400 32MB DH. I also get quite crappy scores, see below :

              Demofile 640x480 800x600 1024x768
              Demo1.dm2 33.3 33.5 31.8
              Demo2.dm2 31.9 32.5 32.3
              Crusher.dm2 17.1 17.0 16.9
              Massive1.dm2 25.7 25.2 24.7

And I had a Voodoo 2 before this as well, and I was getting alot better than that. If you do find the magic answer (apart from upgrading the CPU) please let me know!

              Cheers,

              Richie

You can find the bus mastering option in the powerdesk 5.xx, it is integrated with windows display properties

display properties -> Advanced -> options -> Use bus mastering.

Now let´s see... a K6-2 350 isn´t really cutting edge nowadays. It should have the raw fpu power of a P233-266 MMX. With the Voodoo2, I think you have been using the 3dnow! OpenGl patch, that used with the Voodoo2 was really efective because it used the SIMD intructions on the cpu. I don´t know if the 3d now! opengl patch only works with voodoo cards or if it works also with other renderers.

Nuno: Well i'm also going to test this G400 out on a P3 500. But i want to be able to get it running good on this machine as well. i should definatly get higher fps's then what i'm getting now. There's no question about it. Something is not right.

I do have bus mastering enabled!

Krider: Do you have the latest chipset (Via, Sis) drivers? You may as well search for Joel in the fori, he´s got plenty of experience with super7 platform and G400.

Since you are going to test it in a PIII, don´t forget to install turboGl
