which CPU..likes the g400 non max video card,celeron or amd?

Got a celeron @ 550, G400 16Mb, non-max.
Games very good - big inprovement I supect over K6-2 350, although think hard about athlon or P3 as otherwise OpenGL is not as fast as on nVidia/3dFX crads.

Definately go for the celeron over the K6-2 because it has much better AGP support, also Matrox has not much 3dNow optimisations for K6 series. UT may run better becuase of built in 3dnow support but celeron is better long term investment (upgrade path for Socket 7 non-existant)

these cpus are the only ones that i can afford i of course prefer the celeron cause its overclockable but i see the k6-2's gettin more frame rate on UT than celerons..are most games like that?

my machine is currently a k6-2 350 and im thinking of an upgrade i thought of 366 cel@550? but does celerons hate..g400 32 mb non max dual head video card? cause that is the video card that i have.

I agree... i would also go with the celeron over a k6... it's not that the k6 isn't good but more that the mobo's for the k6 are pretty darn flacky!

If you go with a celery you will have to buy the CPU and a motherboard. For about the same money you can get a K6 III 450.
I have a K6 III 450 on an EPoX MVP3G-M motherboard and my G400 MAX runs AGP 2x with no problems. Quake2, 3, Unreal, Unreal Tournement play quite well with all the goodies turned on at 1024 x 786 32 bit color. Nothing is overclocked.
BTW don't bury SS7 just yet, there may be some pleseant suprises ahead. You never know.

I have a celeron300a@450 and with theg400 16 meg and 128meg ram i get a beautiful 35-39fps on Unreall tourney1024x768 32bit medium world tex and player skins

Yeah dont bury SS7 yet, I have a K6-2 450 128 megs sdram and G400 32 meg non-max and I get 38 fps in UT at 1280 x 1024 16 bit all high quality settings set to on Not to shabby I must say Jediphoenix

The question here should be-
What does your current mobo support?
If it supports AMD K6-3's why not just upgrade the cpu?
What motherboard is it?
K6-3's450mhz are available for about $140.00
If your lucky and your mobo will support it
K6-3's500mhz.18 micron will be available this month or next.(Promises to be one good cpu)

I'm a fan of my K6-2, but at this point, I see my SS7 board nearing the end of its lifespan, and the K6-3's are still relatively expensive. I'd rather put the money toward a new MB, and processor, myself. A new MB/w OC'ed Celeron could probably come out to be cheaper (and a good bit faster) than a shiny new K6-3.

my mobo is an asus P5A i think it will support the k6-3 by upgrading the bios..1st(just so it recognizes the chip). but you think as wombat says..upgrade the cpu.instead of buying a new mobo and a celeron chip?

My 3dMark scores for my two machines:

K6-2-350 G200 2052/5393
K6III-450 G400 3851/7322

Run 3dMark99Max and see where you are and compare to these scores. If your 350 is still around 3000 then a K6III 450 will make alot of difference. 3800 is better than most Celeron 450 scores I've seen. I'd go with the K6III either 450 or 500 for now and switch to an Athlon next year when the motherboards are better.
