• G200 & Q3 - Black screen, sounds fine

Hello.
I have MGA-G200 & using d3d wrapper with Quake2 - fine. When I try Q3Arena with openGL, it crashes. When I use old one d3d wrapper, sound is fine, but screen remains dark. Turbo GL driver is for PIII or K7 and I have PII-300A
Thanks 4 reply.

This is currently an unsolved problem with g200 & Q3. You could try the suggested fixes for G400. The d3dwrapper is not supposed to
be used with Q3.

If you find out a way to play Q3 on a
G200, please let me know.

I can only say with the latest drivers (PD 5.41.008) and the demo it runs amazingly smooth in 800x600x16 (about 28-32 fps). Yesterday i received the normal Q3Arena and still all runs fine with a light decrease in speed (800x600x16 at about 25-28 fps).

I run it on a Celery 466 with 128 megs

And you're really on a G200? How much and which type of video memory do you have, which OS version and which G200 bios? Anything else come to mind?

(you can find the info I'm asking from the
powerdesk information page).

I wonder if we should take this up with iD already...

I'm using G200 with 8megs SDRAM maybe, pdesk 5.41, 5.30, 5.25, newest bios ver 1.04 from matrox, but that's not problem.
The problem is OpenGL32 -> matrox should relase the newer d3d wrapper, the old one is useless.

In the Q3 cd there is a file glsetup that installs some drivers.I had the same problems and know it plays better...

what does it do when you try to use the open gl because i havn't had any problems with it so far ??? I'm running a 8mb SDRam G200 with 5.41 and i'm currently getting 38fps in timedemo, and i seem to average 30 in the game in 640*480. Not brilliant but playable

Same thing as has been described for TurboGL
with G400 systems: Q3 fails to initialize the OpenGL subsystem and exits to the desktop. With 5.2x drivers the icons are pale white and Q3 dies, with 5.41 Q3 survives the initialization only to report an error ;-). More details can be found in my post here.

I still haven't tried the 32bit desktop hack as I find playing the UT demo more fun than tweaking the Q3 demo test ;-).

This could also be a 3dnow! or OS dependent thing, as everyone I've seen reporting a working Q3 w/ G200 has had an intel running Win98SE. I have a K6-2 and the original Win98.

Nice to know you get so good FPS with a system quite close to mine! Makes the waiting (for a Linux Q3 to arrive in stores here in Finland) much worse though ;-).

I have no problems with the Quake3 Demo.

And this is with PD 5.41 (no problems with 5.25 either), Directx 7, AGP 2x.

CPU and bus speeds are at default, the G200/8MB-SG overclocked to 210 with MGATweak.

I get average 25 fps at normal detail settings in timedemo at resolution 512x384 in Windows 98 SE.

If you need more details, just post.

Right the first thing that comes to mind is have u got any voodoo cards in your system, or have you had any voodoo cards in your system ?? If so Q3 could well be trying to initialize glide instead of open gl which is why its having problems. I know from past experiance that glide drivers tend to hide themselves away in windows somewhere to mess up your other gfx drivers no matter how well you tried to remove them. If this is the case you can either try to hunt through windows to remove them or use the program i have linked below to make sure that glide isn't being used.

Secondly make sure that there is no opengl32.dll in your quake3 directory, it shouldn't be here and if it is thats probably your problem.

Right here is a link to a program called Q3Tweak. You can use it to set up your gfx system before you load up q3. This is useful to get round quake trying to use the wrong drivers or q3 trying to initialise with the wrong settings. This program was designed for q3test so not all the options will be useable but all the gfx options command varibles have stayed the same. Don't worry about it not being specifically designed for the latest version of q3 because it will NOT wreck anything. Any varibles that are no longer used that it sets will be ignored by q3 when it starts up and it will not affect the game at all it will just mean you have a few redundant varibles in your q3config.cfg. Use this program to set up your G200 options and then try and load q3 and see if that helps with a bit of luck you'll be up and running in no time.

Also one last thing that i have noticed with the 5.41 drivers is that if you have q3 set to run at 16bit your destop has to be running in 16bit as well, the same applies for 32bit so make sure that your desktop and q3 are running the same colours. I never noticed this with the old drivers so i guess its a new bug, don't you just love matrox

Fyrespray,
thanks, I'll try Q3Tweak over the weekend. I haven't had a voodoo in my system, so that shouldn't be the problem. I also have no opengl32.dll in q3 directory, and my desktop is 16bit. But I'll see what Q3Tweak can do.
