  • Please Help : Proper Way of Quake 3 Arena Installation

    Hi all,

I just installed Q3, but when I launch it, it just kicks me back to the desktop. What's wrong?? At first I thought that I didn't run the GLSetup, but after I ran it, Q3 still kicks me back to the desktop, saying it could not open the OpenGL sub-system.

I did not run Matrox TurboGL Manager after installation. Is this necessary?? There is no IRQ conflict what so ever on my rig (G400:IRQ11) and Dual-Head is disabled. Any configuration or settings that I need to change? BTW, my G400 is the Vanilla o/cd to MAX with MGA Tweak. Driver version : 5.30.007 w/ TurboGL. Is 5.41 any better?? I did not install it coz 5.30 is good enough for me. My BIOS is Ver. 1.3....will upgrading it be any good??

Please help!!! I waited so long for this game and now it refuses to run!! AARRGGHH!! Back to playing REVENANT I guess!!! Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

I have the same rig as you. What are you getting for framerates? The beta drivers that were hyped on the various hardware sites were a lot faster than what i'm getting(42 fps)at 800x600 32 bit. Is it that way for all video cards?

Sorry I can't be much of help coz I ain't a hardcore gamer!!! Just being able to run Quake 3 at playable frame rates is superb for me!!! Really!!!

        Uuhh...beta drivers? what beta drivers??

        Cheers...

          A. Quake3 final has substantially lower framerates than Quake3 Demo did. More entities, etc. etc.

          B. Those "beta drivers" have never seen the light of day, and I'm guessing were a more highly tweaked (and less compatible) form of what we see in the TurboGL. It's not likely they would run the final Q3 properly anywho.

            Step 1:

            Install Win98(se)

            Step 2:

            Install DirectX 7

            Step 3:

            Install 5.41 drivers

            Step 4:

            Install Quake3

            Step 5:

            DO NOT INSTALL GLSETUP

            Step 6:

            Run Q3. Select 800x600, 32-bit display, and 32-bit textures. Then quit Q3.

            Step 7:

            Install TurboGL into Q3 directory.

            Step 8:

            Play Q3. Yay!

the powerdesk doesn't show the turbo GL option when i use it and i know that quake 3 isn't using it(it shows the standard driver)but worse is the fact that when i access the turbo gl setup utility,it lists the game, tells me that quake3 isn't using the driver but when i try to apply the driver, the utility returns the message"can't find the turbo GL driver" by the way the sistem was reformated yesterday and i followed every recomendation on the matrox site, thanks anyways.
