  • FFVIII DEMO & G200

The ff8 demo is out and it looks wonderful on my g200, until it starts to move. The framerate is surprisingly low for a low polygon count, 640X480X16, D3D game. Graphically, it doesn't look much more advanced then ff7 but runs worse than Q3A. Is my hardware too dated or are others with a better processor (& a g200) getting this problem?

I've got a very similar system as yours. The only difference is my mobo. Got a P5A, well, that and I oc'd my 350 to 400. At any rate, I just installed the demo on my system last night and it ran beatuifully. Which drivers are you running?
I used the trick that rylan posted over here http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/Forum5/HTML/006439.html to install the 5.41 drivers and everything works great on my system.

I tried the demo first using PD5.25 and then using 5.41 (which ran much worse until I shutdown the powerdesk program) and they both ran choppy (really choppy) during the draws, and the GF scences, (it also seems to be accessing virtual memory some of the time). Even running around the training room with two characters and a prerendered backdrop was kinda choppy (I've seen how it's supposed to run on my friend's PIII 450 TNT2).
So I tried rylan's (risky?) powerdesk install and I'm still getting the same results. I read the readme and it says the game recommends a videocard with 16 Megs of RAM (why that is at 640X480X16, I don't know), since I've only got 8 Megs on my card could that be the problem? How many megs do you have on your card HedSpaz?

One other thing, I doubt it's my processor since they recommend a p266...

        hi can i play too?
im using PD 5.41 on my G400 marvel
        and its choppy here too
its better if you disable the bilinear thing, but still judders like hell when theres a decent amount of movement, or when you call magic.... :O(
        whats that all about?

Ah! Someone else has the same problem as I!

Since you've got studdering on your G400 I think this makes the problem a little bit harder to solve since you've got plenty of onboard memory and just about everyone else is getting smooth framerates on g200s and g400s. It probably has to do with something else about our configurations, but I've seriously tried everything from swappin' around drivers(previous post), disabling vsync (I run at 100 hz at 640x480)and trying to force agp2x (hang). I've given up unless someone out there has a bright idea.

BTW, disabling the bilinear thing did nothing for me.

Well, I just noticed one difference between our configurations. I'm using an 8mb SGRAM G200, not an SDRAM card. Now, I'm not sure about this, I could be completely wrong so don't quote me on this, but I think the G400 Marvel also uses SDRAM. I can't really believe that this shoudl make a difference, but it's the only real difference that I see.
Another question I have, what version of Windows are you guys running? I'm using Win98 SE.

Hmm, SG vs. SD, could it be?

I never thought of that but heck, anything's possible.
Since my last post I completely gave up and uninstalled the demo. I'll wait for the real game and complain then; after all, it was just a demo

Thanks for tryin' to help out.

(BTW, I'm using the original Win 98.)
