I had this problem a few times when I had my old system:
      AMD K6-2 450
      64 megs RAM
      G200 8 meg

It use to kick me out sometimes on loading new areas. I could never figure it out though, so my solution was make sure to save your game often. And also there is an auto-save feature that saves at every new map.

Anyways sorry I am of no help. I haven't played the game on my new system:
      Athlon 500@750
      64 meg RAM
G400 32 meg Dual Head Vanilla

oh well hope you get it fixed
      Athlon 500MHz @ 750MHz 1/3
      G400 32 meg Dual-Head Vanilla @ 160.2/200.25 (400.5, 2.5/2.0/2.5)

Baldur's Gate kicks ass... in fact, I went through it again when I received my g400 just for kicks. I also finished TOTSC here recently. I've rarely had it crash (no denying that it has crashed... thank you autosave). I've never had it really dump me back to the desktop like you've described. I've used both a millineum II and a g400 and both never did anything strange. I haven't tried dx7 with Baldur's Gate but TOTSC seemed stable even with the introduction of dx7. I've been through all the PD versions with it... "I think" :P

            Hi jediphoenix

Crashes are, unlike what people tend to believe, not always due to the videocard. Almost as often it is due to outdated soundcard drivers. I hade a similar problem with Drakan and I solved that by updating drivers on the soundcard.
Problems might also arise from bad BIOS settings, if all else fails you could try to enter BIOS and load "Optimized defaults" or something like that and see if it helps

            Happy New Year!

Well gee I feel stupid, I found the cause. It is some beta software (not matrox) that I was testing (NDA in effect ) After disabling the software no more crashes at all Thx for all your help and sorry for asking what turned out to be a stupid question
