  • Q3Ademo stutter.

A friend and I with different systems are getting a weird stutter in Q3A. It runs really smooth, except for an intermittant stutter. It's not quite like running below 30fps, its more like a chunk of frames gets dropped every so often.

This is actually independant of resolution or quality settings.

set your swap file to a fixed amount and if possible onto a fresh formatted partition ...

just set min and max to same amount (128MB for example)

I kind of know what you mean. I have almost the same specs as you do. If you run 16-bit everything the jerks go away. When I run 32-bit depth with 32-bit textures, things are no longer "perfectly" fluid. There are slight hiccups here and there, even when just running around in a level by yourself. My best guess would be texture thrashing across the agp bus. Are you running cranked settings at 1024x768? The speed jump from 1024x768 to 800x600 is really noticable but the jerks are still there. Things run acceptable with cranked settings at a lower res, no doubt. 16-bit depth/textures is the only way I'd ever play online though... I'm THAT picky.

A very common problem with the Q2 and Q3 engine is a frequent stutter which is independent of video settings but actually related to sound playback. Try to adjust the s_mixahead variable. I think the default value is 0.2, on my system 0.4 did the trick. Note that increasing this value uses up some system memory.

Are you using powerdesk 5.41, I was getting a stuttering problem when using this with my G200 if so you might want to try going back to powerdesk 5.30 that sorted out all the problems for me. If you do go back to 5.30 you can still install the 5.41 drivers manually, just don't use the matrox installer utility because it will put powerdesk 5.41 back on. Hope that helps.
