I've read similar posts, but in my situation the system freezes occur at specific spots within HL. It's very predictable.
I've only recently begun playing the game, so I'm not very far -- "Office Complex". I figured it may be a conflict with my SBLive, so I disabled EAX and CD music, but still get the freeze (continuous sound loops and must do a hard reset). The only thing that got me past the first spot was to change to "software vido mode" -- there was still a hesitation when I reached that spot, but it didn't hang the system.
Any thoughts that would cause this? So far it's happened twice in Office Complex and once in the level before. Half-Life version is latest (1.0.1.3). Picture quality and frames rates are fine at 1024x768.
I have not seen this problem with any other titles such as Quake 2, Unreal, UT.
System:
P-III 450 (no overclock)
G400 32MB DH (no overclock)
PD 5.41
TurboGL
128MB RAM
SB-Live Value (Liveware 3.0)
Kenwood 52X CD-ROM
Win98 SE
DirectX 7.0
