Your preference: Quake 3 or UT and why?

Quake 3 Arena, obviously. I have a G400, after all.

Q3A is the perfect deathmatch game. The most fun I ever had playing deathmatch. CTF is also pretty solid, though it is still in need of maps. Right now we pretty much play only on one of the q3wctf maps.

I find UT's deathmatch maps a lot worse than Q3A. UT CTF is average, ruined again mostly by the bad maps. Assault is cool and I play it from time to time, but if I want teamplay, it is back to Half-Life's TFC.

Actually, I even prefer Kingpin's mulitplayer part to UT's. Real-mode Kingpin DM and Bagman are both tons of fun. Not to mention Kingpin looks better.

Epic put tremendous amount of work into UT and it shows. UT is packed with content and has the best built-in server browser, in fact, the only which isn't completely useless (like HL's or Q3A's). I even find the guys at Epic and their attitude more symphatetic than some of the people at id.
And the list could go on forever. I still find Q3A a lot more enjoyable and couldn't help but get annoyed and bored my UT's silly maps or player models.

I like Unreal Tourney best and here's why: I have a 24k or under connection because I live in the woods (literally), that means it's single play for me. Based on the fact that Q3's bots perform in a very non-realistic way...you couldn't emulate their moves if you tried. For me that ruins the immersive quality of the game. In UT I feel like I'm fighting "humans" for lack of a better explanation. The first time I saw Hunter jump up and, while still facing me, move in a circle dodging my shots and then land I knew I wouldn't like it.

UT may lack some of the technological "firsts" that Q3 has pioneered but it's Numero Uno with me.

UT. It has more depth and if you get bored of mindless fragging you can frag with an ulterior motive. Q3A is just too similar to Q2 to be called a new game in my opinion.

I like both games but Q3 is better imho. The weapons' balance is better and though some maps are a little boring, there are a few of outstanding quality (e.g. q3dm17).

The main reason I prefer Q3 however is the potential of its engine. The Unreal engine is solid but the Q3 community will probably offer much more excellent mods in the future.

Definetly Q3, what can i say, the game rocks and i love it. I prefer the GFX engine, the maps, the weapons, hell it erm well rocks

I was really pumped up when Q3 Test for Linux was released 6 months ago. After a few revisions and some online gaming with it, I generally thought that it sucked.

Then I got Unreal Tournament Demo and I was hooked. I loved it. I had soooooo much more fun than I had with Q3. The weapons are cool and creative. The levels are very good 3D arenas. I just wish I had a faster internet connection to the Matrox UT server sometimes.

I've since purchased the full UT and haven't looked back. This is the first game to get me off of LucasArts' Pod Racer game.

I like Q3 too, but I prefer to play UT, it doesn´t matter if I play online or offline.
Althought Q3 looks better on G400 and the opponents that are included are very cool, there is something special about UT, it´s hard to explain.

I bought both games and I have no regrets about this, but UT is my favourite game.

Definitivly UT.

As a old Quaker I feel that id lost the quake-feel in Q2 and Q3. the snappy gameplay in quake1 got slowed down to the point where you could fire a rocket, fall past it and take damage when it hit the floor after you landed. The weapons in quake hasn't changed since Q1 either. Nothing new here but a rocking graphics engine.

UT has managed to make a game where every weapon is innovative and "new"(secondary fireing mode rocks), brought new and kewl playmodes and has a more polished feel than Q3.

UT rules i my book.

Q3A for me. I came along in the online arena around the time of Q2 so I rarely played Q1. To me, Q2/3 are much better than Q1. The grapple(something UT sorely lacks) makes a very fast and intense game.

Truthfully, I don't like the stuff that came with Q3(UT bundled mods are decent). What I am really waiting for is Weapons Factory mod for Q3A. www.captured.com/weaponsfactory (if you go for the Q2 version, don't get beta 5.0. Trust me. ) If you guys go out and tryout Weapons Factory, ask me for a few demos of the gameplay that you can get out of it.

I gave both of these games a fair shake, got them both for christmas, tried them both out. My choice: Q3A

Dont get me wrong. UT is a fine game, and the bots are really outstanding. But Q3A is the greatest DM game I have ever played. Keep in mind, I have been there since the days of Doom, Quake, Quake 2, HL, ect...the only thing that can compare was the release of Quakeworld, which made internet DM a reality. Sure, the single player sucks...Carmack made it clear from the beginning that there would be little single player action in Q3A. But I agree with you all, the bots ARE TERRIBLE! Isnt there someone out there crazy enough to port the Unreal bots over to Q3A?

PS: I still think the greatest single player FPS ever was Halflife. UT has nothing on this masterpiece, and it will take one helluva immersive game to beat HL.

I, by far, prefer UT, for the better weapon balance and with i mean that no weapon kills instantly, except the sniper, which is LOF and the redemeer which is pretty rare. With the alternative fire mode it sometimes look like we have 15 or 16 different weapons.
As to the maps, if Q3A deathmatch maps weren´t awesome there wouldn´t be much of a game left, besides just look at rook or overlord, wow!!!
Finalley the last nails on Q3A coffin is it´s worse internet performance in a 33.6k modem (my case of course) than UT which is very playable at this speed. I play with pings of 250ms, and the data transfer is lower.
AND AS YOU MAY NOT KNOW, IN PORTUGAL, LOCAL PHONECALLS AREN´T FREE SO THE UT AWESOME SINGLEPLAYER MODE IS VER IMPORTANT TO PEOPLE LIKE ME
