  • Framerate Quake3

    Hi people,
I see people posting framerates with Q3 at 800x600 with a TNT2 of about 70 fps (timedemo 1).
Now what I read was that the G400 is at par with the TNT2 (and sometimes even faster), but my framerate at 800x600 full quality is 'only' 38 fps (timedemo 1).
    System specs:
    PIII-500, 128 MB, G400MAX, DH on (doesn't make a difference?).

Is this right? Are you G400MAX users getting the same fps? If not, could you please tell me how to fix this?

    Thnx!
In case it's a harware problem:
    PIII-500@560, 256 MB, G400 MAX DH on, ABIT BH6, MX300
    Win2K drivers: 5.52

I use the TurboGL, have the newest drivers (not the beta), and run win98.

Anyone know how to run Halflife in win2k btw? It sais I don't have any OpenGl devices.

I've posted numbers like that recently using the following settings:

Start off with the Normal defaults
      800x600
      16-bit/16-bit
      Marks on Walls disabled
      Dynamic Lighting disabled

      I was using a 600 MHz PIII.

If you're going to jack everything up, it's going to slow the game down, with the TNT2 or the G400.

Trilinear filtering doesn't really work on the TNT2, so if you enable it, you only see a 1-2 frame per second drop. It does work on the G400, so you see a much more substantial drop in framerates.

If you're looking for fast gameplay, and I think you should if you're in a multiplayer session, you're going to have to stay away from the High settings and those sliders, and disable some of the bells and whistles.

I'm not a big online player, but I suspect if you spend a lot of time looking at the scenery in a deathmatch, someone is going to shoot you.

Again, the high settings, Marks on Walls, and Dynamic Lights are the real fps killers.

So, your fps with your G400Max is the same? ANY of you have the SAME fps, with the same settings? Then I'm happy. I just don't want to be the only one, overseeing some major fault.
Those TNT2 posters had the same settings as I did btw, and it wasn't you paul

            Hi FaRaN!

My framerate on timedemo 1 is 39.5 FPS (High Quality Settings)

I obtain this with an onest PII 400 Mhz, not overclocked, and a Good G400 Max DH, sitted on a ASUS P2B board with 128Mb of system RAM.

Of course, i've installed Turbo GL (latest) with PD 5.30 (Latest TGL doesn't work with PD 5.41 on my system...)

I'm going to try PD 5.50 **Without** Turbo GL..... (I heared that in PD5.50 TGL still doesn't be necessary..)

Maybe your system isn't tuned so good or you have missed to install TurboGL.... i think you should have at least 20% higher numbers to show (if SSE instructions aren't used) with a 500 Mhz PIII !!

            Tell me about!

            Cheers Zanna.

                On a P3@560, G400 non Max not o/c, 390MB, PD 5.41 TurboGL
                demo001 = 54.2
                demo002 = 60.1
in 1024x768, 16bit color and textures
dynamic lighting off, marks on walls off
(this is the way I play Q3A, tweeked for performance - a couple maps I need to switch to 800x600 for acceptable fps)

I think I was getting about 33 fps - before tweeking.

I can get about another 8 fps by o/c Matrox card.

                To run timedemo
press the ~ key to bring down command console
                type TIMEDEMO 1
type DEMO DEMO001 or just run the demo from the menu screen
after the demo finishes press the ~ key, it will show you your fps

Just upgraded to an Athlon 500 from SS7-ville and am pleased to report a whopping 83 fps on Demo 1 with a vanilla 32meg G400 overclocked at 800X600. Everything is 16 bit, all the "ons" are off, subdivisions are set to 999, no gibs, etc...

                  Not bad...

You guys are getting some strangly low scores.
                    I have:
                    celeron ppga 550
                    192 ram
                    G400 DH (stock speed)
and with everything on in 32bit color (only thing i turned off was marks on walls)
and it all jacked up im getting 48.6 to 53.1 fps in q3 at 800x600. (using 5.41 and the TGL)
at 1024x768x32 it drops to 36.8 to 38.1 fps.

my com_hunkmegs is at 128 though, but i was getting the same scores when i had it at 96 (but my levels and such load a lil faster )

Celeron/p2 TGL does not work with 5.41 Read the release notes dammit. Install 5.30 and then run the tests.

I have a p2 400 and i dont know HOW that other guy with the p2 gets 39 fps high quality. I get about 25-28 at high quality at 1024x768 (i will never go any lower). Lowering the resolution does nothing for me, not even 1 fps improvement. I have a MAX.

                        ...

where did you get that from ???

I guess you're a l'il confused, because certain SS7 boards (read K6) have some known issues with PD5.41 and should be used with PD5.30 if you cannot get the TGL working with PD5.41 ...

Anyway, all P2/Celeron users should ahve a look into here: http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/Forum4/HTML/002606.html

It seems that there are still a few FPS to be mobilized ...

I read the matrox site stuff wrong. I could swear that's what it said. Oh well, 5.41 doesnt help anything (pretend i said that in the first place)

But SOMEONE tell me how THAT guy got 39 with a p2/400/MAX and im getting timedemo1 results of 25. And i DO have turboGL.

Also, half life and unreal tourney run real real sheety in open GL compared to D3D
