  • Newbie question about OpenGL

Apparently the G400's OpenGL performance is not good. But with TurboGL, it is all right. My understanding is that the TurboGL can only be used for a few supported (mostly FPS) games. The question I have for everybody is whether there is a way to get better performance for my OpenGL games that aren't supported by TurboGL. With this, I am really looking forward to the future (games like Diablo II, Baldur's Gate II, Warcraft III, possibly Ultima Online 2, etc). I am not an FPS player so I could care less about TurboGL. Is Matrox going to release good OpenGL drivers that will work for ALL games in the future?

    Yes, fear not young Koala!

The 5.50 drivers outperform the TurboGL in all OpenGL apps/games... not just FPS.

However, the OpenGL performance was certainly just fine in these games before. The reason the TurboGL came to be is that you couldn't get the raw framerates people wanted in FPS games... so Matrox optimized those games.

And the common misconception that the Matrox G400 is slower in OpenGL is just that - a misconception. The 5.50 drivers are faster than anything out there, when you compensate for features.
