  • SOF demo & G400s

Anyone get those annoying texture flickering in SOF demo? I used to get those in Quake2 before TurboGL driver.

What are you guys running in? I run 800x600 with everything on and high. 1024x768 was choppy!

Thank you in advance for replies.

I get a few flickering textures in the cut scenes, but nothing during the game.
When I hit ESC during the game though, the options screen comes up, but with a really wild flickering background on the right hand side.

Yeah, I got a bunch of annoying flickers in the introduction cutscene. Good thing I am not the only person with this problem.

          no problems here.
          Make sure:

          16-bit desktop
          extend desktop OFF
          NO TurboGL drivers installed
In case it's a harware problem:
          PIII-500@560, 256 MB, G400 MAX DH on, ABIT BH6, MX300
          Win2K drivers: 5.52

The only visual problem I got in the SOF demo was a few flickering textures that were unnder a light in the intro. The res was fine.

But unfortunately, the game crashes back to desktop after it loads the second level... just like every other OpenGL game. I've had this problem for a long time and tech support just goes "duuuuh, I dunno". It's really pissing me off.
              My hardware:

              Matrox Millenium G400 16mb
              Asus P5a-b super socket7 motherboard
              K6-2 300 processor
              128mb pc-100 SDRAM

              My software:

              Matrox bios version 1.3
              Matrox drivers 5.41
              TurboGL 1.0002
              Motherboard bios version 1009b1
              Directx version 7a
              Windows version 98SE

1024x768 with everything high and enabled? How? I wonder if my Pentium II 300 Mhz is the bottleneck? I don't overclock my video card.

                Did I miss something?

I still get AMAZING performance at 1024x768/16 without TGL. No problem. (v5.41)

I know why the game is choppy. I think this is a bug!

It is because the game is trying to use 32-bit mode color! Everytime I changed the game option to 16-bit, it keeps going to default mode -- desktop is 32-bit! I set the desktop to 16-bit mode, change the graphic option in the demo to 16-bit, boom! It works and faster even at 1024x768 (although I prefer 800x600 for smoother FPS).

However, I am still having texture flicker problems on wall and floors (especially in the TV room and the first cutscene). Argh!

                    Any other ideas?

Here in New Zealand a G400 Max is about $599.00 while a G400 16 Meg is around $400.00 so I struggle on with my 8 Meg G200 until a decent GPU card (Next Gen) arrives. I say the same thin every year!

                      On my system (PII 300 SL2YK @ 450, 96 Meg PC100 on Mycomp Via 133 M/Board) I can run SOF at 640 x 480 and 800 x 600 with everything on 32 bit smooth as I like. As soon as I increase to 1024 x 768 its no so nice.

I am probably one of the few who is quite happy running games such as Q3, UT and SOF at 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 16 bit while I still can.

And Yes I do know what Awsome performance i'm missing out on as I have tryed a Gforce, TNT2 Ultra and Matrox G400 Max in my system as my mates work sells them (Cost price is still expensive over here when your paying off a house etc)

As soon as these sort of games do not run at 640 x 480 16 bit O.K I will be first in line for a new Vid card.

                      Just my 5 cents worth!

                        AntDude:
I have noticed the same thing you just mentioned, at least when using the PD5.41 or older. I saw Q3 running in 32bit color, even after I changed the menu option to 16bit. After I dropped the desktop back to 16bit, the opposite occurred- i.e.: Even when I selected 32bit color from within the game, it appeared to be running at 16bits (dithering very noticable in explosions, higher framerates, etc.).

I do have to say that the game doesn't exhibit the same behavior for me under the 5.50 beta drivers, so maybe they're linked somehow? Actually, now that I've recently reformatted and done a clean reinstall of everything, the 5.50's seem less buggy and more stable than the others I've tried, not to mention faster (the ICD also seems faster in Q3 than the turboGL).

I don't even load PD in memory since it is useless to me. Does SoF need it? I doubt it. I am using the lastest non-beta driver and TurboGL driver. Dunno what else?

I get great framerates in SP and MP at 1024x768 16-bit, everything high and enabled. I don't see enough difference between 16/32 bit to give up higher resolutions.
