  • Celeron 400 Overclock?

Should I overclock my Celeron 400, I am currently getting slower performance in d3d from my g400max than my friend is on his celeron 300a with a voodoo3 2000.

I heard that the g400 chipset performs better with faster cpus.

If anyone knows where I can get a glide wrapper for DOS so that I can run Carmageddon in high resolution.

400 Celerons are more difficult to overclock than 366's, due to the fact that the best (100mhz FSB) solution may not be attainable. The G400 does favor faster chips, but keep in mind that if you decide to run at 75 or 83 FSB, you may run into problems with your hard drives or other peripherals.
    That said:
-get yourself a GOOD fan and heatsink combo. If you have room for it, go for the GlobalWin FDP32. It's blocking two of the RAM slots on my P2B, but I guess that won't be a problem until I want more RAM
-make sure your RAM is PC100
-having a slotket adapter than adjusts volatage (if your mobo can't) helps, but creates more heat as well.

    Or:
    Get a PIII

I've got my Celeron 400 running solid at 570mhz (6x95). It makes a HUGE difference over 400mhz in games but mostly in mp3 encoding and whatnot. I could get into windows at 600 but every game I tried would crash. So if your mobo has the fsb settings then definately go for it, but dont expect to get 600 cus not many people do. If you run into hard drive problems with the 83mhz fsb (as Darksyd mentioned) try turning off udma, that worked for a friend of mine.
      Good Luck!

I have an SMP system (Abit BP6 and G400 Max) and one of the pro's celeron 400 runs at 600 stable....If you get problems check your AGP divider...

        I use Alpha coolers from 3dfxcool They....cool!!!

A util like CPU idle can help as well...

Punk, what week is your celeron? Mine is 41 and it just cant get 100% stable at 600. I took the voltage all the way up to 2.3V but it didnt help. Also what voltage are you using? Btw, I'm using an Alpha cooler as well

With overclocking, your results will always vary. Just because one person can overclock to a certain speed doesn't mean that you can.

Have anyone use 3DMark2000 for the testing?
I am now using Celeron 400 (w/o overclock) but get an incredible low value of 700 with my G400Max.

Compton, my Celerons are both from different weeks. The first and oldest one didn't OC to 600, but max 530 Mhz. Even with cooling. I didn't have to change my cpu voltage, but I'm running on 2.05 ...just be sure it has enough.
I boot at 500 Mhz for both pro's.
Because I use Win98, NT and W2K i use (Abit BP6)softfsb to oc. a bit more. The cpu that oc's best I put in the first socket. That's why I can use 600 mhz in win98.

                Kelvin_ky_teh, Under Win98 with a cleron 400@ 600 AGP 1/1 I scored between 1900 and 2000 with a tweaked G400 MAX in 3Dmark2000

but my problem is the g200, a slow video card

Punk, I can't imagine a Celeron 400 can have such a high value. Have you tried the test without o/c your CPU? Is my CPU the main reason for getting so low 3DMark value?

I am now using Magic-Pro 6VIP-C. Once when I was using Millennium, I could o/c my CPU to 450 but after I install the G400Max, it become unstable and I need to reset the CPU to 400.
Maybe it is time for me to upgrade my CPU and motherboard.

How much does a slocket affect overclocking? I'm using the ASUS S370 card and I'm thinking that it might be limiting my speed. I didn't even know that ASUS made different slockets but I saw in my documentation that there's a different card (i dont remember the model name right off) but it said that it has "higher quality components". Can anyone comment on this?

                            Compton,
I don't know how much it affects your ability to overclock, but the S370D is the part you are referring to. It enables Dual Celeron support for boards that would not have otherwise had it, as well as supporting hardware monitoring (if your mobo supports it).
I'm using it with my Cel366/550 without problems.
