UT server where??

blades, try running UT with the bots to get a feel for the game and the levels. When I first tried Q2 online I hated it. I was constantly getting killed. Watching some of the players I noticed that they would run through the level in a dinstinct pattern, grabing weapons, power ups, and fragging people along the way. Seemed kind of pointless until I actually managed to get some kills of my own.

Also a point about setting up UT. UT uses secondary fire options, so bind your secondary fire to a easy to reach key or a mouse button if you don't have it assigned as jump.

I've given up on the MGI server with my ISP. Both UT and Q3 lag terribly for me whenever I try to play there.
I can find a Q3,Q2 or HL/TFC server anytime, no problem...but UT just sucks on my ISP on any server. Looking into possibly switching ISPs in the next couple weeks...and boy, will you guys be in for it if I become an LPB

I had gone with the war machine skin, but because I saw too many folks like me, I changed to the Necris skin a couple of weeks back.

I have been "teleported" by poor ping times before. Some of the more annoying things about UT with a slow connection are the elevators/platforms. I think that I'm up and walking around, and then I realize that I'm back at the bottom. I end up killing myself in most bizzare ways with a slow connection, too. Ugh.

I was getting my butt kicked pretty soundly last night.

I usually have a pretty good ping on the MGI server(56K dial up) of about 250. A couple of nights though, it was up around 1300! Tried logging on and off a couple times, even rebooted my computer -- didn't make a difference. Next day, it's fine again -- go figure....

I've got to agree with Thundrchez, those elevators are a pain when ping is bad. It's a bummer to launch a rocket, and then find out you're standing in front of a wall....

Sorry to hear that Kruzin. Although maybe that's good news for the rest of us folks who think the competion is plenty challenging already.

Beezer, do you get that loss or orientation effect when ever your ping rate starts to crap out? Last time I played against you I noticed would loose track of me and I could get behind you. My friend complains about this, and says its pretty bad on the matrox UT server though I find it perfectly playable. Thing is, he's on cable, me on 33.6 mode and we live a few blocks apart.

Thundrchez, that war machine skin was great, especially with all the messages! And that fake death was neat. I saw you hit the ground and wondered what the hell happened as nobody nailed you. Not that I plan on falling for that again, especially if we are on opposing sides.

Strider - Yep, the biggest consequence of the rising ping is loss of orientation for me -- maybe it's packet loss with the bad ping rate. Fortunately it doesn't happen very often... unfortunately the rest of the time I just stink....

I wonder if a large variation in ping rate is worse than a poor, but fairly constant ping.

Beezer, what kind of a connection are you running?

I have had problems with the lifts, and shooting walls and such with UT before, but usually only when my ping is boucing around. So I'd have to say that a consistently higher ping is better than a low ping with intermittent spikes, at least in this game. Even then, I usually have better luck with it than I've had with Q3 in the same types of situations.

BTW, Beezer- I feel your pain. Playing along nicely, hacing a one on one with someone, only to have them seemingly vanish, only to find out they're behind you (as you die in a HUGE splattered mess) can really drive a person nuts!

Right now I'm connecting with a 56K dial-up. I've had less than stellar connection and download speeds with this setup. I've visited "tweak sites" for modem improvement and have tried several things (including a direct connect with my phone box outside), but I think I'm limited by the quality of phone lines in my neighborhood -- about 30 yrs old.
I've been told by the local cable company that my city will have cable access available in March. Until then, for the most part, my connections are quite adequate -- usually pings in the 250 range. Even when the MGI server is giving me problems, I can easily find a hundred other servers with <350.
With the MGI server, when the ping is bad, it's consistently bad -- 1200 to 1500. But it's more enjoyable to play than other servers out there.
I do occassionally get the feeling the ping starts fluctuating when I get in close proxity to someone else. Hard to explain - more a feeling than actual numbers - but I know it's not an fps issue with high detailed actors, etc. My system holds fps pretty stable, even with several people on screen.

Anyway, my connection was good enough to "rough up" Muad'Dib pretty well last night.

A ping of 250 is good on a dial up modem. There isn't many servers that ping much lower than that from my modem. I guess I'm just lucky that the MGI server has one of the best pings of all the UT servers out there.

I do notice a increase in lag when there is alot of action, and some nights the ping is considerably higher than other.

I do have to say though that I enjoy playing on the MGI server more than any other. The people playing are helpful and civilized, and competition can be incredibly fierce some nights. I do wish although that there were more people playing.

Hey Beezer, from what I could read on my g100 and see from the colors in software mode, we were on the same team!?! Maybe that was my problem? You know, it's truly a shame to be playing UT on a 19 inch monitor and a T3 connection in SOFTWARE MODE when you can hardly tell who's on your team.... Oh well, life's a bit*h, it's how you deal with it.

Hey Xippo, maybe instead of the "thigh pads" UT should have given us "butt pads". I was getting a little sore taking all those shots in the "you-know-where".
