  • q3 stutters every now and then

When i'm playing q3, ever couple of minutes (sometimes more frequently) it will freeze the image on the screen, play whatever noise was currently playing 3 times, then continue as if nothing happened. This is fine in single player mode, since it picks up where it left off, but in network games it sucks because i always wind up 15 feet farther on than where i was, and more often than not, dead. I have seen this happen on my friend's system too.. he has a k7/128ram/v3 2000

    i have a dual celeron@550/128 ram/g400 32ram

i assume everyone has seen this? is there a way to prevent it?

    thanks

You might want to help us out a bit with more detailed specs. I can't imagine it has anything to do with the components you listed because your friend has a very different configuration and is experiencing the same problem.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark here. I suspect something is polling your system.

What kind of NIC are you using?

Are you using virus protection software?

    Again, I'm guessing.

Sounds like an old Q2 problem, try fiddling with the sound mixahead settings.

Put this in your autoexec.cfg, increase if the sound gets distorted.

Try disabling McAfee and see what happens.

There have been issues with 3Com software and drivers, but that doesn't seem to be your problem.

Actually under this is quite normal with Quake3! It is a combination of cpu and network lag. It always results in being fragged.

On my previous system P2-350/192MB/G400Max Q3 stuttered every now and then. I think this was a sound issue, because setting the background sound volume to 0 solved this problem.

              Try this.

Sorry guys, you're ALL WRONG. It's a CD issue. Make sure you do a full install, and pump up your HDD-cache settings using TweakAll from www.3dfiles.com

This is a problem i had with Quake 2 when using CD install. Once i did normal install it was fine.

That's it, I knew Q2 had that problem I just didn't remember why.

I wouldn't say that this is normal, I have never had it and most of the people I know have never had it either. The only problems I have heard about with stuttering is people with TNT2U's and GeForce on certain maps due to nividia's buggy drivers
