  • Disaster strikes...new drivers , old drivers ahhhhh

Well I've managed to screw myself this time.
I decide I'll take the win2K plunge, format, install, new betas, Q3 no go. Try everything I can think of, say "screw it then". Format install win98, new drivers. Q3 no go. Screw it then, matrox utility uninstall, 5.41 back in (which served me well before), Q3 no go.
Think , hmmmm, maybe driver problem with stray files. Screw it. Format. win98, 5.41, Q3 no go. Insane, worked beutifully before and now no Opengl. If I have turbo GL installed Q3 I freeze with a sond loop, not installed I get kicked out to windows and have to right click desktop and change video settings to get a proper resoloution showing again. I've tried 64,128,256 AGP. My cards are spaced real far with sound being opposite side of the board. irq is assigned to vga and I have two fistfulls of hair in my hands.

Win 2k worked beutifully for me, but I went for the dual boot option to play it safe.
Here are some suggestions for Win2k.
    -Use Powerdesk 601019 (Latest 501 beta )
-Go through Device manager thouroughly and
look for any conflicts before installing
    the drivers
-Get rid of any resident video drivers.
-Install video drivers before liveware 3
    This worked for me,
    Hope it Helps,

hmmm video drivers before liveware eh? Interesting. What puzzles me though is why I can't get my G working again in win98. Doesn't make any sense. Same os, same drivers, same hardware. Fresh format no software or any other video drivers touching it.

        OK, Win98 again.
I removed Liveware and the sound card from the system, removed the G400 drivers using matrox util. I even upgraded the G's bios. Then I installed the new beta drivers. Deleted the opengl32.dll from Q3 dir.
Same lock up after 30 secs or so in game.
Im running out of gas here.

Have you installed DX6.1 or higher?

Im up to 7.0a for direct x, Quake3 requires 7.
I'm trying win2k again since I'm getting the exact same symptoms under both os's, may as well try to make the one I want work.

On your IRQ list, you didn't list PCI Holder for IRQ Steering for your video board. Is it there? It should be.

Yea I believe I just abbreviated. I'm in win2k now again. The symptom I get here (sound card not installed) is a lock up at the very first frame of the id logo animation.
Seems to me that this was what happened when I didnt have directx7 installed in win98.
                Anyone deal with this?

Well UT runs but locks up the box upon exit.
So it seems I have partial D3D. OpenGL is being a bitch though.

There's a good chance your Windows 98 and W2K problems are separate issues.

Have you tried reseating your G400? Maybe something knocked it out of whack. Give it a good push and make sure it's aligned properly.

Did you make any changes in your motherboard BIOS recently or upgrade the drivers of any device?

Also, make sure the Dual Head feature is not enabled when playing OpenGL games. Make sure your color depth is not set to 24-bit. (Considering you got UT to run, that's probably not your problem.)

OK this is strange but true and beutiful. After I installed UT Quake3 mysteriously works. Now UT asked me if I wanted to install DX. I said yes just to see what would happen as I am dealing with a win2k box. No error reported. UT worked, and mysteriously so does Q3. I did the same things over and over. Nothing worked , all I did different was install UT. Hows that for wacked.

I am still perplexed by my inability to get it working in Win98. it all really makes no sense. I'm not going to cry though, it works I'll just sit here play quyake and be happy. :P Thanks for your help though, it makes a big difference to a persons frustration level to receive some feedback.

Heh , well. Guess what. I was playing Quake3 last nigth, all was well. I thought, "hmm I think Ill try some Counter-Strike" I install half-life and all the trimmings and after it was all done none of the games worked. Quake was back to the no-directx like symptom of freezing on the first frame of the id logo. whacked!
