  • 5.50 beta's, UT, and G200

Has anyone gotten this combination to work? I've got a G200 on an SS7 Mobo(which very possibly is the problem) and UT loads fine in D3D. When I actually load a level though, all of the wall, floors, ceilings, etc. are completely black. I can see weapons, armor, health, other players, etc., but none of the environment. Has anyone else run into this problem or did I just do something stupid?

Thanks for any input you guys can give me.

Not just SS7. I use an Abit BH6 + Celeron300A@450+turbo. I ran the UT348 demo in D3D /w the 5.50.10 drivers with exactly the same result. My guess is 5.50.10 has a D3D driver bug for the G200. You might want to try OpenGL support...

However, my experience /w OpenGL is this:
It works in the demo - sorta. The OpenGL support on the UTDemo thrashes my Swap file up to 300+ megs. Gottah be a bug in the OpenGL support for UTDemo even on the 5.41 drivers (nonTurboGL), cause it does the that is the same result for my friends K6-2 350MHz + G400. All that swapping makes the framerate low... Alas, our systems only have 64Megs of RAM...

Well, confirmation that I'm not the only one with this problem is nice.

As far as OGL goes though, the reason I haven't tried it since I bought the game is cause even Epic themselves acknowledges that OGL is very buggy and even labels it as "experimental". I keep hoping that they will hurry up and finish it, but so far that doesn't appear to be happening.

On the upside, assuming that it is a mobo related problem it won't be much longer. According to Pricewatch there are 2 retailers who are carrying the new Epox 7KXA Athlon board. MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

      Anyway, thanks for the input.

Hey, no Prob. I refuse to play UT with the 5.41 drivers because there doesn't appear to do any dynamic? lighting, making the scene look like crap.

I've seen a noticable difference in speed on D3D between Unreal and UT on a K6-2 350Mhz /w the G400. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, hoping Matrox fixes this problem and comes out with a playable D3D for the G200 on UT, because right now I hardly afford a new game, let alone new hardware.

I have seen the same problem on UT405B at 800x600 using WIN95 OSR2.
But when i swapped to a HD with WIN98SE on it works O.K. using the same hardware, and all the latest updates,DX7 BIOS etc
So not a Hardware prob Matrox !!

            Hey Dudes,

With G200's the 5.5 series of drivers seem shit on most VIA chipset motherboards. Stick with 5.41 for now.

If you want to improve UT with your G200 then do the following.

Go into advanced setup or look for the game settings file in the game directory and increase the game cache from 4 to 16.

Under Rendering/D3D turn Multitexturing from True to False.

These 2 simple changes will improve the game appearance and performance quite considerably.

The same changes also apply for Wheel Of Time as it uses the same engine.

            Mellow
