  • question to matrox/any way to use g400 tech demo as screensaver

    please say yes.
nothing SO FAR, in my opinion is more impressive than the g400 tech demo that comes with the card.

any way to make this a screensaver?

    cheers!

all a screensaver is is an executable file with a .scr extension. Windows by default looks in /windows or /windows/system for these .scr's. There are other programs that will let you go beyond this. All you'd have to do is either put the whole demo there or figure out how to link it, and rename the techdemo .exe to .scr. But I don't see how that would be useful since you basically have to manually run that demo anyway. Just a thought.

Just curious, but why in god's name would you want to use a techdemo or any 3d based app for a screensaver. All that succedes in doing is keeping your system temp up and running your G400 chip and processor at 100% all the time.

Uhmm.. why in gods name would have a system that could not take a 3d screen saver or anything of that sort and have problems with over heating?

I have my G400 vanilla at 167/214, my Celeron 366 at 566.. and.. i can have it at 100% processor usage for days on end with no troubles..

You need to UNDER-clock your system if it is not 100% stable at 100% usage. There really is no point otherwise. Just running a load dependant time bomb.

The way things are going, everyone will upgrade their pcs once a year or less. Disposable PCs is more likely the ironic way things will be. I doubt many people who paid $50-100 for their celerons really care if it burns up eventually. It just gives them an excuse to upgrade to whatever took its place. Screensavers were initally invented because the CRTs of old mono/EGA/CGA dumb-terminals would burn the image into the screen and leave a ghosting imprint if left on over long periods of time. By either turning it off or constantly shifting the pixels one could avoid something like this. Today, I doubt any decent monitor would ever encounter such a problem.

Screensavers evolved into basically a fad. The term "screensaver" today is pretty much trivial. I guess a true "power" conscious individual would just configure their monitor to go into suspend mode instead of using a screensaver. But who's power concious anymore?

Btw, there is a program that lets you play your quake/quake2/half-life/etc... demos as a screensaver. Good way to test your systems long term stability.

well why not take screenshots of all the pictures in the demo you want and then download one of theo screensavers that runsgraphics files back to back and just plug the screenshots in.

Funny you say that abs, that's exactly what I have set my monitor to do: suspend after 10 minutes of inactivity.
Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

I run 3D "screen savers" just to test system stability and "burn in" a new processor. And no I don't have ANY over-heating problems! (of course I also have about six fans in a full-tower case ) In fact keeping a system operating under some kind of "load" is actually better for the electronic components than simply letting it "Idle". The only "exception" to this would be a case where the processor was being over-clocked and using a bump in voltage to promote stability. Then you should watch for over heating. In an attempt to keep the system from crashing .
