  • Video RAM Cachable setting in BIOS

    Hi there,

I was wondering why I only got about 20 fps in quake3 in Win2k. Then I tried changing some BIOS settings. I read in another thread, that I should disable all video shadowing, vga palette snooping and BIOS caching, so I figured I should disable Video RAM cachable as well. But when I turned it back on, my q3 framerate doubled!! I am now running quake3 in win2k at about 50 fps (after some tweaking and overclocking my G400 a little more
High quality, 800x600, 32 bit, bilinear filtering, high quality sound, 3d sound off
    G400 DH 32MB @ 173/200/173
    Single Celeron 366@550MHz
No more rebooting to win9x for a decent game of q3a! ;-))
So DON'T disable Video RAM cachable if you have that option in your BIOS!
Video BIOS Cachable didn't seem to make much of a difference. Can anyone tell me why everyone is saying I should disable it?

    Greets,
    Jorg

Sorry if i sound a little stupid flip-on , But How did u get the core and mem to run at thouse diferent speeds ?? , u use a g400 overclocked with powerstrip , and the best i can get while running the memory @ 193 is a core speed of 145 . i know that there are other ways of overclocking the card but the other programs look to complicated , sorry if I sound dumb man .

Because video RAM is the memory on the card used to store stuff like textures and such, so making it cacheable improves the overall scores so much.

On the other hand, video bios is used by Windows *only when they initialize drivers*. Making it cacheable only makes difference when playing is DOS. Video bios cacheable is obsolete setting and should be off, unless you wish to play some DOS based games.
Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.
