  • 5.50.010 Q2 problems, Q3 working fine!

I just installed the new 5.50.010 beta drivers for the G400, and it gave me a boost of 35FPS in quake3arena. So I was very happy, but my smile soon faded when I loaded up Quake2, the colours when firing something were all wrong. It's alright when just running around in the level, but as soon as fire for instance the blaster, the colours changes from the normal ones, to black with a lot of other funny colors scattered around the textures, purple, red, blue and so on.

Is there anythin to do about this? When will the final 5.50.010 drivers be released?

    My sys-specs:
    p3-558, G400, 128MB sd, and SB live!.

Matrox manages to re-enable this effect with every second driver they release. Any OpenGL developers out there know what causes this? Can someone tell Matrox? Please? The NT ICD has done this on and off since it was first released.

As long as this problem exists switch back to the TurboGL drivers for games which show these problems!

ARG, now I can't even install the drivers,
when I have the 5.50 drivers installed, and booting into w98, it just freezes when almost into windows!
Then I have to use safe mode to uninstall the drivers, reboot, install vga drivers, reboot, and then it works again.
So I try to install the 5.41 drivers which used to work, but then the same thing happens, it freezes just before loading icons and start-bar......
ANNYOING, now I have to surf in 16 colors!

FYI: ID Software's original GLQuake and GLQuakeWorld have been showing rainbow textures problem since the first OpenGL ICD. It's funny that this particular problem has been alive so long despite all reports of it here and still Matrox hasn't done anything about it. Maybe they will when this problem starts to break newer games as well.

I've install the new betas, and I cannot, for the life of me, reproduce this error using the new ICD. I ran Quake2 in both 16-bit and 32-bit with dynamic lights enabled, and I didn't get the "rainbow" effect or anything like it. Something is up. I've listed my specs below. Maybe we can find something the people having this issue have in common and isolate the problem.

Silverflame, I would take ParaKnowYa's advice, for the time being, and install TurboGL in your Quake2 directory. I find TurboGL to be faster in *Quake2*, even at 1024x768.

            5.50.010 ICD, 1024x768, Sound Disabled
            16-Bit: 75.5 fps
            32-Bit: 70.1 fps

            TurboGL, 1024x768, Sound Disabled
            16-Bit: 76.1 fps
            32-Bit: 71.3 fps

G400 Max at spec (PD 5.50.010)
            PIII 600 (Katmai)
            Asus P2B-F
            384 MB RAM
            Aureal SQ-2500 (Vortex 2, v. 2048)
            Windows 98se

Well, sounds a bit curious. Finding it out however would be interesting.

Paul, maybe you could let me know if you have some clue for this problem. I'll try to find something too... maybe Matrox has some idea?!

Silverflame, maybe you want to try out my driver pack. Be sure to use the uninstaller in Windows save more and install my driver pack, reboot and install the TurboGL drivers for any game not working correctly until something has been solved! The drivers should work, you can d/l them @ www.paraknowya.de! =)

Well, first I think we should determine if anyone using a Vortex 2-based soundcard is having this problem with Quake2. I've seen nothing but Soundblaster Live's so far, although that very well could be because so many people own this board. (I tend to be suspicious of soundcards.)

MAN! This is annoying.....Now I have q3 running fine, with 35 fps more than usual.
But I still get the "rainbow effect" in quake2. It only happens when firing a weapon, especially the rocketlauncher and slowmoving projectiles, so I think it has something to do with moving lightsources.
The map itself is perfectly alright, until I fire a weapon. It is really prohibiting normal gameplay, and this isn't a good time for me, as I'm going to a LAN this week.....
When will Matrox finish the 5.50 drivers?

Silverflame, did you switch back to TurboGL in Quake2? If not, you really should.

No I didn't, because I really need the extra 35fps in quake3, or else it will drop below 30fps sometimes.

Can't I keep the 5.50, but use turboGL in quake2? Can you send me the turbogl16.dll file? Or what should I do?

You can copy the OPENGL32.DLL (from the TurboGL drivers) into the quake 2 directory and it should work just select default openGL in the settings as usual!

The TurboGL Manager provides check-off boxes so you can select the games you want the file installed in. You could have checked-off Quake2 and left Quake3 unchecked. The results would have been the same.

I'm glad everything is working for you.
