  • Slowdowns/temp. freezes

I love my g400, and it's a wonderful card (mmm, sweeet sweeet bumpmapping), but, here's the prob:
Every 15-20 Minutes, the system will slow to a halt for about 30-60 seconds, and then start back up, as if nothing had happened. This doesn't seem to happen in linux/w2k....system:

g400 dual head 32mb (non ultra)
    256mb 8ns SDRAM
    p2 350
    Monster Sound mx300
    USR 56k Faxmodem
    POS REaltek ethernet card
no other video cards in at the moment.

    THanks in advance,

    -Nick Johnson

I would look for some sort of program running in the background, and polling the system.
Before you start a game, do a ctr+alt+del and shut down any extra programs (virus, system monitors, fast find, e-mail, etc).

That's just it, I can nuke all other programs, and it still does this. Disableing bus mastering helped for a little while, but next reboot, the problem reappeared. Thanks for the advice tho

I have a similar problem - While playing UT and Q3A, the system will get hung in a loop with the audio repeating in the background. It will eventually clear in around 7-9 seconds or so, but by that time I'm dead.

Maybe there is an access to the cdrom or harddisk. Have you checked any powersaving settings?

I have this symptoms too sometimes with my ZIP drive.

Axatax, at least you have an excuse to keep dying then on UT... Can I use that one too sometimes (when people here start complaining about my lack of competition)???

I nuked APM long ago (gpm hated it....moving mouse nuked all ps/2 devices , thus, no apm probs....and that sounds like the same prob for me....it's quite annoying (especially considering mp3's stream via the network to other machines in the house)

PS - I sent this in to Tech Support, no reply yet :/

Is your phone ringing at the time? I dunno what the heck is going on with my system, but whenever the phone rings, my system grinds to a halt. When I'm doing gaming such as in UT, I hear the music is a little bit of a loop, but the system is stuck. In a couple of seconds (less than 30-60), everything is back to normal. I gotta do something about my setup with that.

It is an external modem, and I've tried to disable any kind of monitoring on that com port and irq that might have been causing it. I am suspecting that it is something special bloat that they added to w98, but I dunno what that is. No fax software or autoanswer, etc.

UnCrFe, have you tried ripping out your POS Realtek NIC? I think that the netbui protocol has a lot of bloated net overhead once every 15-20 minutes which might be causing that.

                      Durango:
No, it's been turned off for a while (and my pink is 180-190 when I had my voodoo3)
Thundr: The machine is on it's own line, and (sadly) netbeui isn't installed:
                      Network props:
                      TCP/IP (dial-up and realtek)
                      IPX/SPX (Realtek)
                      Netbios Support for IPX/SPX (realtek)
File & Printer sharing (I need it so the CRONjob on the mp3 server can grab any new mp3's)
                      Client for m$ networks
And on the zip drive idea, the hard drives aren't allowed to suspend, neither are the cd's

                      -Nick Johnson

PS - Anyone else having this prob (other than axatax)?

PPS - Sorry this is taking so long....the prob is quite annoying (By the way, if you guys need any additional info, I'm glad to help, short of my IP/CD keys
