  • HL is displaying 2 pictures on 1 monitor...

...and that's not all. I have to play HL in D3D because whatever i do, OpenGL will not work. Whatever, i am perfectly happy with the performance but:

If i leave HL, e.g. to tweak the controls, and return to the game i have displayed two small pictures next to another in the upper half of the monitor and the colours are in a greenish/violet style. I asume that the G400 tries to display something for some fancy 3D goggles, but i don't have any. My question: how do i get rid of that? I hate to leave a Netgame and being unable to return into the same game by resuming.

    My setup:
    AMD K6-2/350 (not overclocked)
AOpen AX59Pro (Via MVP3, 4.17 drivers for AGP, none else)
    128 MD PC100 SDRAM
AGP G400 SH 16MB (not overclocked, 5.52 drivers)
    PCI empty
PCI AMD 53x SCSI II Controller (Win98SE drivers)
PCI Realtek Network Adaptor (Win98SE driver)
PCI Creative SB PCI 128 (4.10 drivers)
    ISA empty
    ISA AVM Fritz! ISDN Adaptor

    IRQ Situation:
The G400 shares a IRQ (9) with the USB, but no USB devices are present. The USB must be activated to avoid a MVP3 specific problem - without it nothing goes ;-) Else all devices have their own IRQ.

    Any ideas?

    Thanx

Ok, for starters, did you install the VIA IRQ Miniport driver? It is needed for Win95/98, since the system appears to view the MVP3 chipset as a VP2 chipset(really old VIA chipset)., and the VIA IRQ miniport driver fixes this.

Next, what version of powerdesk are you running? The latest is 5.52.

Did you try the new TurboGL which is available?(requires Powerdesk 5.50 or later)

The lack of an IRQ driver can have WEIRD effects on system performance, from devices getting an ! in device manager for no obvious reason, to weird problems with the video, and conflicts, and so on. I've used around 5 different MVP3 chipset based boards, and the miniport has fixed almost every problem I encountered.

Thanks, i appreciate that and will give it a try (and report later) but my main concern is the strange behaviour in Half-Life.

      BTW, i use Desktop V5.52.

Stop using the 5.52 drivers if you can't get them to work. There have been quite a few compatibility issues reported from VIA users. Try 5.41 and, if they don't work, 5.30.

You might want to download and install the previous version of TurboGL, v. 1.00.

Should you be using any of the 4.17 drivers? Did they come with your motherboard, or did you get them elsewhere?

Again, my question focuses on the strange behaviour in HL (the dual imgae thing) and the OpenGL issue is none for me (i am fine with D3D). I just wanted to give you the closest possible description of my system.

Regarding the drivers, the problem has been there since i installed HL for the first time (used 5.11 drivers then) and never disappeared.

Yesterday i updated on Targons adivise to version 4.19 of the 4-in-1 drivers and installed the IRQ driver. Nothing changed and everything is just running fine, as before, but the problem remains.

As said before, OpenGL is not an issue for me as i don't play Q3 and the D3D mode of HL is fast enough for me. I only want to get rid of these dual-display thing in green/violet, so that i need not to start HL anew after tweaking my controls or stuff. Help wanted...

I had the exact same problem (and the exact same problem explaining it clearly).

I had to fall back to using 5.41 and NOT using TurboGL at all. Also, be sure to install the VIA AGP driver (don't install anything else in the 4-in-1 driver package). The IRQ driver, I've never heard of and I didn't install it.

I haven't tried any new G400 drivers since (if it ain't broke...).

I also read recently that the newest drivers from VIA caused more problems than they fixed. Search for threads here & in Gen. Hardware and install the one suggested.

I play Half-Life in OGL and UT in D3D, so everything works for me.

            Good Luck!

In resonse to dual pictures on screen in HL. If you are running 32 bit color on your desk top change to 16 bit. Solved my problem with this.

Thank you all. Fixed the problem by re-installing all drivers anew (stopped short of installing Win again ;-). Don't ask me why but now i can resume the game, yippie.

                Thanks again

Hmmm... no 2 player 2 screen option anymore?

Great you killed the problem. Was it really just reinstalling the drivers? (I'm asking because I'm doing this FAQ as you might know!

Actually no. I removed all drivers i have had installed and setup completly anew.
Here is the order of proceeding:

                    1) Uninstall all drivers
                    2) Run RegClean
                    3) VIA AGP Turbo mode drivers V4.19
                    4) Matrox G400 drivers V5.52 +Desk
                    5) AVM ISDN card drivers V1.4
                    6) Realtek NIC drivers from Win 98 SE V4.1
                    7) Creative SB PCI 128 drivers V4.06

Reboot and voila, perfect. I don't know if this is important but i also entered manually into the MSDOS.SYS the command Logo=0 and i kicked the WEB folder for the Active Desktop from Windows. Active Desktop has been deactivated from the beginning.

                    Well, that's it.

Before i forget. The AGP driver is from the 4in1 Version 4.19 drivers from VIA, i don't know which version number the actual AGP driver has - and i don't know where to look ;-)

                        Now this is strange...

I hade Halflife installed.. played a lot in OpenGl mode.. without the TurboGl.. worked great. Then I had a big exam in school. So i removed halflife.

Now i installed halflife again. Started it and and and... opengl won't work... huumm..??? Exactly the same configuration.. but it just won't work.

I had the exact same thing, i mean the screen sort of "doubled" on 1 monitor. It were not two screens, just one screen with a thick black line in the middle, but it must have been the same thing you described. I got this screen with Kingpin, Kyodai Mahjong and some other games. The problem occured when i updated to the 5.52 drivers, but i uninstalled the old drivers with the matrox uninstaller. I'm now using the older drivers again woith no problems at all.
                          I don't have a VIA chipset though.
                          I got an LX chipset

About the two images displaying in violet in HL, I found it happening on my TNT2U aswell as on my G400 MAX. I had the TNT2u installed removed it ran HL and it happened again, could it be Valve's programming? I have no idea as I don't know much about drivers and the such. If you didn't already know for those of you who it's still happening to if you're playing single player simply press excape go into configuration go into video go into video options I think it is and click on the res you already have selected then click ok etc. and resume game
