  • UT last night & the jump button thingy

    man i suck last night.. :P i was THE frag of the party. it was frustrating at time.. but i had a blast never the less

    newbie question though. what DO you guys use for jump button? i tried using the directional keys and ctrl as jump, but that didn't work out because my pinky can't keep up with the constant jumping. then i change to the 'wasd' keys and either q or e for jump. again though.. when thing gets tough (1on1 against someone in a room), i can't jump either cause i was too busy using my fingers trying to dodge left and right. and secret to this? when i played doom and quake, i hardly ever jump, but that wasn't a problem with those bots. and when i see people jumping all over the place and dodging my firepower left and right. i thought i should up my skill a bit heh i never got into q2 or q3a because i didn't like the brownish color in the game.

    anyway, any suggestion is welcome

    Hey glarec.

    My main controls are this:

    Mouse 1: Primary fire
    Mouse 2: Move forward
    Mouse Wheel Click: Hammer
    Mouse Wheel Up: Flack Cannon
    Mouse Wheel Down: Rocket Launcher
    Mouse 3 (side button): Translocator
    Mouse 4 (side button): Throw Weapon
    Space bar: Alternate Fire
    A: Strafe left
    S: Move backwards
    D: Strafe Right
    Shift: Jump

    I bind my other favorite weapons to the qwe keys. I don't use the next/prev weapons for I found it takes too long to find the weapon I want to use. Bind your favorite weapons to mouse/keys so they are one press away.

    I don't use the W key for forward movement but most people do. If you use the asdw keys for movement, use mouse 1 and 2 for primary secondardy fire and use the space or shift key for jumping.

    Jumping takes practice but once you get in the groove of it, it will save your life more than once.

      NICE SETUP!! wish i have thought of that *grin* i'll try that tonight if i get to get on too bad my mouse doesn't have button 3&4. $20 doesn't justify the extra $20 i have to spend to get the upgrade heh. my ms intelliEye with 2 buttons costed me $29.99 where as the next upgrade(not the explorer) cost $49.99(on sale, reg is $59.99) and the explorer is $69.99(this one is too big and hurts my hand and wrist). i'll have to learn to use the translocator sometime.. it was fun when i was just mess around by myself in the murc server when nobody else was on heh

      again, thanx for the advice!

        That's an interesting setup Xippo -- maybe I'll try some of it sometime.
        For what it's worth, here's my key/mouse configuration:
        Instead of the typical "wsad" movement keys, I slide to the right slightly and use e(forward)s(left)d(back)f(right). That's because my keyboard has the little bump on the f key, and it's easy to find quickly by feel (and in the dark).
        Primary fire = Mouse 1
        Secondary fire = Thumb button (Logitech Wheel Mouse)
        Jump = Mouse 2 (this way I can move around with one hand, and jump/fire with the other).

          When you say people are jumping all your shots, try and aim at their feet with things like the alt fire Shock Rifle and the rocket Launcher and all things with radius damage, you wontinflict as much damage but at least it's better than shooting right past them.

            ozandrew: yeah, i try that too most of the time.. some people are just too good heh. after xippo's advice though, i added the air hammer as my most used weapon and i can immediately switch to it as soon as people get close to me i think i did better today than i did before.. cheers!

              i use a ch throttle and a ms explorer mouse.

              ch throttle 12 buttons and forward back motion. mouse is in look mode. with weapons maped to varius keys and mouse buttons.

              now this might not be the best setup but i can play for hours with no pain in my hands

                My 2 cents.

                -Keep it simple, so you can use the same basic config for -any game-. I mainly play Q2/Q3/Tribes/BZ(2) and UT, and all movement/zoom/jump/weapons are the same. My 2ndary button in Tribes is the jetpack, but for UT it is the 2ndary weapon fire.

                -Do all similar tasks with one hand. Do all movement with your left hand. All shooting with the right hand. In tribes I do have my jetpack as my 2ndary button as an exception.

                My config:
                a=strafe left
                w=forward
                s=back
                d=stafe right
                Alt=crouch
                Space=jump

                Shift=walk (no footprints heard)
                Tab = scores

                q=best weapon
                e=zoom (used in tribes - 2ndary fire in UT)
                (In UT it brings up the sniper gun)

                For ctf games I use key '1' for my translocater a lot.

                To switch weapons forward and back I use my scroll button on my mouse. I always know what weapons I have, so I can scroll to it w/o problems. Might be difficult at first.
                I also use 'q' since it is your 'best' weapon and a good starting point from which to scroll.

                I don't have to move my hand around, and for me it has the best feeling. Plus, I can take a drink while running pretty easy

                If you are a newbie, try mapping aswd and your space bar, and running should be easier IMO.

                Good luck!

                  i like xippo's setting cause dodging is way easier..but it takes time to learn new controls ill try it out for a week and see if i get used to it. ..but isnt it hard to jump w/ your little finger?

                    Yeah, I kept trying to find better combinations where the jump key wasn't on the pinky finger. After awhile I just got used to it, now it doesn't bother me - I like it there. Play around with the controls until everything feels comfortable.
