g400 max & outcast

I'm having problems with outcast crashing to windows on launch.
I'm running 5.51 on a PII 400 with 256 Mb and DirectX 7.

Has anyone else had problems and managed to fix it?

As the game came out before DX7, there were some problems, if I recall correctly. I think they were addressed by the patch(es), though...
It couldn't hurt to install the latest patch (assuming, of course, that you've not done so already...):

I have run the game without a problem on a PII-333, Riva ZX and a Celery-533, G400m w/PD5.52 with no problems...

Make sure you experiment with the detail settings and enjoy a rather good game!
